About the book
The next generation of mobile broadband networks, commonly called 5G, is promising wider coverage, much faster data speeds, very low latency, and highly reliable connections for smartphones and other devices than ever before. Working alongside 3G/4G systems and coexisting with Low Power Wireless Area (LPWA), 5G will be crucial for new domains of smart services and applications without human interactions, such as Machine-to-Machine (M2M), Internet-of-Things (IoT), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) or Vehicle-to-X (V2X), sensors gateways or servers’ communications, surveillance cameras, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), autonomous vehicles, medical robots, etc. Different advanced techniques have been developed for the mobile 5G radio interface and backhaul in order to build reliable, cost-efficient and performing mobile networks, and to endorse the deployment and the operation of a sustainable ecosystem for 5G and beyond. Furthermore, new emerging information technologies are used to build an intelligent mobile-aware operating environment. The major components of such mobile environment are Big Data Analytics (BDA), cloud-computing, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), IPv6, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Software Defined Networks/Network Functions Virtualization (SDN/NFV), etc. 5G should be commercially launched as early as next year in some countries, but so far it seems like there are more questions about 5G than there are answers.
This book intends to provide the readers with a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in different aspects related to 5G communications networks and the use of emerging technologies (MEC, AI, BDA, etc.) in the mobile context of 5G and beyond, evolving with the services/applications landscape.
