About the book

This book is going to be an excellent overview of duodenal physiology, pathology, and therapeutic aspects. Duodenum is the most metabolically active part of the small intestine. It is the site of active absorption of many nutrients. It is also the source of many hormones which not only control biliary and pancreatic secretions but also different metabolic activities in our body. It is also the commonest site of peptic ulcer disease and peptic ulcer bleeding. Giardiasis and many opportunistic infections like cryptosporidium, microsporidium, and mycobacterium avium intracellulare infection can occur in the duodenum. Duodenal adenoma, ampullary adenoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, and duodenal carcinoma are occasionally seen in our clinical practice. Different diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of these topics will be discussed in this book. With the epidemic of obesity throughout the world, the duodenum has now become one of the therapeutic targets. Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass surgery is done to bypass the duodenum so nutrient absorption cannot occur. Now duodenal resurfacing is done to control obesity and type II diabetes mellitus.
