Researcher in enteric health, most notably probiotics and their relationship to nutrition and disease protection in poultry as well as the design of avian enteric inflammation models for the study of the impact of diet and microbiome on growth and development. Previously, Dr. Téllez was the President of the National Poultry Science Association of Mexico and is currently a member of the Mexican Veterinary Academy and the Mexican National Research System.

About the book

Antimicrobial resistance is a global issue and a public health emergency on a global scale. The misuse of antibiotics in the human, animal, food, and agricultural sectors has exacerbated the current crisis. Worldwide, the rapid emergence of resistant bacteria jeopardizes the efficacy of antibiotics, which have revolutionized medicine and saved millions of lives. Bacterial infections have reemerged decades after the first patients were treated with antibiotics. Antimicrobial resistance has been attributed to the overuse and misuse of these medications, as well as a lack of new drug development by the pharmaceutical industry as a result of diminished economic incentives and onerous regulatory requirements. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified several bacteria as posing urgent, serious, and concerning threats, with many already imposing significant clinical and financial burdens on the United States' health care system, patients, and families. Similarly, the World Health Organization has developed a five-point global action plan to combat antimicrobial resistance and coordinate the efforts of numerous international sectors. Coordinated efforts to implement new policies, reinvest in research, and pursue crisis management strategies are critical. We now face a long-term and possibly never-ending battle against multi-drug resistance bacteria. A more comprehensive approach to bacterial infection is required. Such alternatives include non-compound approaches (products other than conventional antibacterial agents) that target bacteria or any approach that targets the host such as antibodies, probiotics, probiotics, and vaccines are the most advanced approaches. However, innovative approaches and cutting-edge solutions that include quorum sensing and quantum mechanics approaches can change the balance to reduce this epidemic issue.

Book compiled, published and promoted

Expected publication date: July 17th 2022

All chapters are copy-checked and typesetted before being published. IntechOpen regularly submits its books to major databases for evaluation and coverage, including the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index in the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection. Other discipline-specific databases are also targeted, such as Web of Science's BIOSIS Previews.

Guillermo Tellez-Isaias was born in Mexico City, in 1963. He received his Doctor in Veterinary Medicine degree in 1986 and his Master in Science degree in Veterinary Sciences in 1989 from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), College of Veterinary Medicine. He worked as a full Professor at UNAM for 16 years, 8 as head of the Avian Medicine Department at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Tellez was President of the National Poultry Science Association of Mexico, is a member of the Mexican Veterinary Academy and the Mexican National Research System. Currently, he works as a Research Professor at the Center of Excellence in Poultry Science of the University of Arkansas. His research is focused on the advantages of the poultry gastrointestinal model to evaluate the beneficial effects of functional foods to enhance intestinal health and disease resistance.
