About the book

Microbes are essential components of ecosystem. The existence of mycorrhizal fungi in rhizosphere support or inhibit the plant growth naturally. The detection of suitable plant growth promoting fungi help to improve the crop yield and sustain to survive in adverse environmental conditions including soil salinity, drought, high and low temperatures, infections from pathogens and pests. Similarly, the industrially valuable products are prepared from the diverse group of fungi present in the rhizosphere. The interaction of fungi with medicinal plants enhances the synthesis of various secondary metabolites, those used as drugs. The mycorrhizal fungi secreting plant growth promoting substances, enzymes and other metabolites, which are playing vital role to enhance the productivity of economically important plants.

Several species of fungi have been utilized to decompose the organic materials, toxic compounds, plastics and make the soil become fertile. On the other hand, it reduces the chemical usage in agricultural field, which leads to decrease the soil pollutants. Although several studies have revealed that some of the important mycorrhizal fungi are useful for human kinds, the aim of this book would be updated for newly identified mycorrhizal fungi for human welfare.

Dr. Ramalingam Radhakrishnan was born in India. He has received several research awards and fellowships during his Doctor of Philosophy studies and he has made a significant contribution in ‘Application of magnetic field on improvement of crop plants’. His research was honored by the Chinese Academy of Science providing financial support to present his findings in an international conference held in China. Professionally, he has been employed as a post-doctoral researcher, research professor, and assistant professor in India and South Korean universities and research institutes. His major research finding is the utilization of microbes or elicitors to improve the crop under environmental stress conditions and biological weed control. He has published several research and review papers as main author in reputed journals, books, and conferences.
