About the book

Wood is a natural bio-composite material, which can be processed to make traditional primary products (such as lumber and timber) and secondary products (such as conventional wood-based composite panels and modern structural composite panels). The overall objective of this book is to increase the awareness of engineered wood products, their uses in construction, and their contributions to the reduction in carbon footprint. This book starts with an introduction to wood as a natural bio-composite material, followed by the basic knowledge of the anatomic features of wood from nano to meter levels. The emphasis will be put on a discussion on the construction uses of engineered wood products, which are manufactured via chemical, physical, and mechanical approaches or combined. These engineered wood products include solid timber products and those made of strands, veneer, and lumber. Other innovative engineered wood products, such as wood-based sandwich panels, and advanced uses will be discussed as well.

This book intends to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art in engineered wood products and their uses for wood manufacturers, engineers, architects, builders, researchers, and students.

Publishing process

University of New Brunswick

Dr. Meng Gong is the leading researcher and director of the Wood Science and Technology Centre (WSTC), the University of New Brunswick (UNB), Canada. He received his Master’s degree in wood technology and Ph.D. in wood engineering from Nanjing Forestry University (China) and UNB, respectively. He worked, as a JSPS post-doctoral fellow, in the Wood Research Institute, Kyoto University (Japan). He has published more than 150 referred journal and conference papers on wood technology and engineering, numerous industry-oriented technical reports, and co-authored the book 'Fracture and Fatigue in Wood” published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd., and authored the book chapter 'Lumber-based Mass Timber Products in Construction' published by IntechOpen. Dr. Gong leads research on wood quality, wood modification and engineered wood products in the WSTC. He dedicates himself to R&D of modified wood and engineered wood products and their uses in construction. Dr. Gong is a voting member of the Canadian Commission on Construction Materials Evaluation, National Research Council, Canada, and a fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science.

Introducing your Author Service Manager

Ms. Dolores Kuzelj

As an Author Service Manager my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review, to approval and revision, copyediting and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I maintain constant and effective communication with authors, editors and reviewers, which allows for a level of personal support that enables contributors to fully commit and concentrate on the chapters they are writing, editing, or reviewing. I assist authors in the preparation of their full chapter submissions and track important deadlines and ensure they are met. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review, and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
