About the book

The ever-growing speed of scientific studies all over the globe is a renowned fact. This growth is relatively proven by the increasing number of research papers, books, reports, etc. yearly. Without a doubt, this process causes a data detection problem. If the consequence of a part of a scientific effort is to deliver constructive information, the interpretative published works have to be commonly recognized and accessible and they have to be able of being perceived and assessed by the reader.

The present book tries to link these gaps in the field of structural optimization, exclusively bridge design optimization. Nowadays, structural optimization methods have become the key implement in designing structures. Design optimization leads structural engineers to an improved material utilization, hence reducing structural weight and costs. Besides, optimization methods aid the designers to think creatively with an innovative solution, however, solving engineering optimization problem is not an easy task. As a result, evolutionary techniques have been applied as a part of procedure of achieving the exact solution. Therefore, countless metaheuristic algorithms have been established and developed by eminent researchers in the field to solve engineering optimization problems. Although, the majority of efforts in optimization area call attention to other engineering applications, This book aims to advance the design optimization process of bridge-type structures from theory to practice using different optimization techniques including but not limited to artificial neural network, smart hardware and software systems, advance analysis and design approaches, finite element methods, performance-based design, theoretical techniques, etc. These techniques help bridge designers to optimize bridge structures in terms of topology optimization, cross-sectional dimensions, construction cost, damage identification, material grades, etc.

Dr. Khaled Ghaedi has been in both the academia and industry fields. He has built his professional career holding different positions over the years with experience in engineering and research. He is the technical director of the engineering software and solutions provider in Malaysia to support the industry in Southeast Asia. He is the committee member of the international structural design code, ASCE 7-22. He has frequently published his research papers in well-known journals in different engineering fields such as earthquake engineering, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, and materials and damage assessment of buildings, bridges, and dams. He has contributed to the process of knowledge sharing through his roles as an editorial board member, reviewer, and committee member of eminent journals, conferences institutes, and organizations.
