Nowadays, structural optimization methods have become the key implement in designing structures. Design optimization leads structural engineers to an improved material utilization, hence reducing structural weight and costs. Besides, optimization methods aid the designers to think creatively with an innovative solution, however, solving engineering optimization problem is not an easy task. As a result, evolutionary techniques have been applied as a part of procedure of achieving the exact solution. Therefore, countless metaheuristic algorithms have been established and developed by eminent researchers in the field to solve engineering optimization problems. Although, the majority of efforts in optimization area call attention to other engineering applications, This book aims to advance the design optimization process of bridge-type structures from theory to practice using different optimization techniques including but not limited to artificial neural network, smart hardware and software systems, advance analysis and design approaches, finite element methods, performance-based design, theoretical techniques, etc. These techniques help bridge designers to optimize bridge structures in terms of topology optimization, cross-sectional dimensions, construction cost, damage identification, material grades, etc.
