About the book

The parathyroid glands are the critical regulators of calcium and phosphorus in the body. The glands have the poor fortune of having been named based on their anatomy; they are physically near the thyroid glands but their functions are not related. Parathyroid hormone regulates a cascade of other hormones, including vitamin D, to regulate the absorption, storage, and excretion of these critical minerals. The primary target tissues for parathyroid hormone are the bone and the kidneys. Parathyroid hormone also regulates bone turnover and is used therapeutically as an osteoanabolic agent. The paracrine factor parathyroid hormone-related peptide signals through the same receptor, which contributes to the signs and symptoms of hyperparathyroidism and resistance syndromes. The regulation of parathyroid hormone is based on calcium sensing by the glands themselves, bypassing the hypothalamic-pituitary axis.

This publication will serve to review our understanding of the function of the parathyroid glands and to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of parathyroid-related disorders.

Introducing your Author Service Manager

Ms. Marijana Josipovic

As an Author Service Manager my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review, to approval and revision, copyediting and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I maintain constant and effective communication with authors, editors and reviewers, which allows for a level of personal support that enables contributors to fully commit and concentrate on the chapters they are writing, editing, or reviewing. I assist authors in the preparation of their full chapter submissions and track important deadlines and ensure they are met. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review, and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
