Since the old days, the light from living creatures has grasped the hearts of people in folklore and academics. Scientists studied ecology, physiology, and evolution of the luminous organisms, and the living light has been investigated physically and chemically as bioluminescence. Bioluminescence reaction is phylogenetically specific to a taxon, and unique bioluminescence reaction has been identified with specific luciferin and luciferase. Based on the reaction, bioluminescent sensor probes have been developed with luciferin and luciferase modifications by mutagenesis, protein-fragment complementation technique, and etc. The probes made it possible for monitoring of intracellular environment and molecular interactions, and also for bioluminescence imaging with advanced low-light imaging devices. In particular, live imaging has become a significant technique for studying cellular interactions. Thus, the outcome of the bioluminescence researches is now adopted and in the field of medicine and life science.
