About the book

Recently, researchers have given considerable attention to soft robotic systems. Soft robotics presents a new robotics paradigm that is centered around flexible, configurable, and compliant structures and actuators. Unlike finite-DOF (degrees of freedom) hard robotic systems that are composed of kinematic chains of rigid links, soft robotic systems have characteristics of continuum topology with infinite DOFs. These robots use soft actuators such as photo-responsive actuators, electrically responsive actuators, pressure-driven actuators, thermally responsive actuators, and magnetically responsive actuators. Precise motion control for soft robotic systems is a highly challenging task since accurate models of the actuation dynamics and environmental interactions are often not available. Formulation of precise models of movement, sensing, and actuation and development of new control techniques that can be applied to soft robotic systems remain open research areas.

This book is intended to bring together important contributions from international researchers to provide the state of the art in soft robot design, modeling, fabrication, sensing, and control.

Applications to edit the book are assessed and a suitable editor is selected, at which point the process begins.

Chapter proposals submitted and reviewed

Potential authors submit chapter proposals ready for review by the academic editor and our publishing review team.

Register for the book

Approved chapters written in full and submitted

Deadline for full chapters: February 5th 2022

Once approved by the academic editor and publishing review team, chapters are written and submitted according to pre-agreed parameters

Full chapters peer reviewed

Review results due: April 26th 2022

Full chapter manuscripts are screened for plagiarism and undergo a Main Editor Peer Review. Results are sent to authors within 30 days of submission, with suggestions for rounds of revisions.

Book compiled, published and promoted

Expected publication date: June 25th 2022

All chapters are copy-checked and typesetted before being published. IntechOpen regularly submits its books to major databases for evaluation and coverage, including the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index in the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection. Other discipline-specific databases are also targeted, such as Web of Science's BIOSIS Previews.

Columbus State University

Professor M. Reyhanoglu is currently the Director of Robotics Engineering at CSU, GA. Prior to joining CSU, he was the Glaxo Wellcome Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the University of North Carolina Asheville. His extensive research makes use of advanced mathematical techniques and models that arise from fundamental physical principles. His major research interests are in the areas of nonlinear dynamical systems and control theory, with particular emphasis on applications to robotics and aerospace systems. He has edited 4 books and authored/co-authored 5 book chapters and over 130 peer-reviewed journal/proceedings papers. He served on the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control Editorial Board and on the IEEE Control Systems Society Conference Editorial Board as an Associate Editor. He also served as an International Program Committee member for several conferences and as a member of the AIAA Guidance, Navigation, and Control Technical Committee. He is currently serving as an editor of the International Journal of Aerospace Engineering and the Electronics Journal.

Introducing your Author Service Manager

As an Author Service Manager, my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review to approval and revision, copyediting and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I maintain constant and effective communication with authors, editors and reviewers, which allows for a level of personal support that enables contributors to fully commit and concentrate on the chapters they are writing, editing, or reviewing. I assist authors in the preparation of their full chapter submissions and track important deadlines and ensure they are met. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review, and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
