About the book

A numerical simulation is a calculation that is run on a computer following a program that implements a mathematical model for a physical system. Numerical simulations are required to study the behavior of systems whose mathematical models are too complex to provide analytical solutions, as in most nonlinear systems. This book aimed to cover different computational techniques for simulating a large variety of engineering and physical systems. Applications are drawn from aerospace, mechanical, electrical, chemical, biological, and mining engineering. Topics include mathematical formulations; network problems; sparse direct and iterative matrix solution techniques; Newton methods for nonlinear problems; discretization methods for ordinary, time-periodic, and partial differential equations; fast methods for partial differential and integral equations; techniques for dynamical system model reduction, approaches for molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo techniques. This book will interest researchers, scientists, engineers, and graduate students in many disciplines, who use mathematical modeling and computer simulation. The book will undoubtedly serve as a valuable tool for researchers interested in getting involved in this multidisciplinary field. Furthermore, it will be helpful to encourage further experimental and theoretical research in the areas mentioned above of numerical simulation.

About the editor

Ali Soofastaei

Artificial Intelligence Center

Dr. Ali Soofastaei is a global artificial intelligence (AI) projects leader, an international keynote speaker, and a professional author. He completed his Ph.D. and postdoctoral research fellowship at The University of Queensland, Australia, in the field of AI applications in mining engineering, where he led a revolution in the use of deep learning and AI methods to increase energy efficiency, reduce operation and maintenance costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in surface mines. As a scientific supervisor, he has provided practical guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students in mechanical and mining engineering and information technology for many years. Dr. Soofastaei has more than fifteen years of academic experience as an assistant professor and leader of global research activities. Results from his research and development projects have been published in international journals and keynote presentations. He has presented his practical achievements at conferences in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has been involved in industrial research and development projects in several industries, including oil and gas (Royal Dutch Shell), steel (Danieli), and mining (BHP, Rio Tinto, Anglo American, and Vale). His extensive practical experience in the industry has equipped him to work with complex industrial problems in highly technical and multi-disciplinary teams.

Introducing your Author Service Manager

Mrs. Karla Skuliber

As an Author Service Manager, my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review to approval and revision, copyediting and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I maintain constant and effective communication with authors, editors and reviewers, which allows for a level of personal support that enables contributors to fully commit and concentrate on the chapters they are writing, editing, or reviewing. I assist authors in the preparation of their full chapter submissions and track important deadlines and ensure they are met. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
