About the book

Tasks that seem natural to humans are often tricky for robots or artificial agents, furthermore, often they are difficult to implement – to program. Hard-to-engineer robot tasks are being tackled by learning algorithms not only in academic and research environments – robot learning has progressed into all aspects of robot applications and use, be it in industry, rehabilitation, assistive robotics, or in entertainment applications. The progress of robot learning has drastically changed the landscape of the applicability of robots. Going hand-in-hand with machine learning and exploiting deep learning techniques, have made robot learning one of the best prospects for technology with the potential to radically change our future. But to change the future, the foundations need to be firm. This book intends to provide the reader with just that. Through the representation of robot learning algorithms and their applications in both academic and real-world settings, the reader will obtain an overview of the possibilities of today’s robot learning and a prospect for the future.

Expected publication date: July 4th 2020

All chapters are copy-checked and typesetted before being published. IntechOpen regularly submits its books to major databases for evaluation and coverage, including the Clarivate Analytics Book Citation Index in the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection. Other discipline-specific databases are also targeted, such as Web of Science's BIOSIS Previews.

About the editor

Andrej Gams

Jožef Stefan Institute

Andrej Gams received his diploma degree and his Ph.D. in robotics from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He is currently a senior research associate at Department of Automatics, Biocybernetics, and Robotics at Jožef Stefan Institute and an assistant professor at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School. He was a postdoctoral researcher with SCIEX NMS-CH fellowship at the Biorobotics Laboratory, EPFL, Switzerland, and a visiting researcher at the ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories in Japan. His research interests are at the intersection of humanoid and applicative industrial robotics, specifically in robot learning in general, learning by imitation, compliance and adaptation of robot motion and cooperative human-robot operation. He has authored or co-authored 20-some journal papers and over 100 conference papers. He is an associate editor for International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems, where he has been also a guest editor, associate editor for Frontiers in Neurorobotics, and has been a member of several conference editorial boards, including ICRA, IROS and Humanoids. Dr. Gams received the ICRA CEB Best Reviewer Award at the 2015 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Seattle, USA, Best Scientific Paper award at the 23rd International Workshop on Robotics in Alpe-Adria-Danube Region, Smolenice, Slovakia (2014), Best Paper Research Award at the 19th International Workshop in the Alpe-Adria-Danube region in Budapest, Hungary (2010) and the Jožef Stefan Golden Emblem Award for his Ph.D. dissertation in 2012.

Introducing your Author Service Manager

Mr. Josip Knapic

As an Author Service Manager my responsibilities include monitoring and facilitating all publishing activities for authors and editors. From chapter submission and review, to approval and revision, copy-editing and design, until final publication, I work closely with authors and editors to ensure a simple and easy publishing process. I maintain constant and effective communication with authors, editors and reviewers, which allows for a level of personal support that enables contributors to fully commit and concentrate on the chapters they are writing, editing, or reviewing. I assist authors in the preparation of their full chapter submissions and track important deadlines and ensure they are met. I help to coordinate internal processes such as linguistic review, and monitor the technical aspects of the process. As an ASM I am also involved in the acquisition of editors. Whether that be identifying an exceptional author and proposing an editorship collaboration, or contacting researchers who would like the opportunity to work with IntechOpen, I establish and help manage author and editor acquisition and contact.
