\r\n\tWith these open statements, it is clear that there is a need for a comprehensive research book on the primates which deals with current climate change and consequent effect on the conservation of primates. Primates and other forms of wild species (avi-fauna, reptiles and others) are known to be good indicators of environment condition. Primates are the species most likely to be re-used in experiments and, unfortunately, trade in species such as chimpanzee, baboon and other monkeys have increased greatly in recent years. Their endocrines, behaviour, social structure, evolution, food and feeding habits, nervous system, communication effort and reproductive physiology are similar to those of man which makes these animals valuable in testing drugs and other form of uses.

Gas gangrene or clostridialmyonecrosis is a necrotic infection of skin and soft tissue and it is characterized by the presence of gas under the skin which is produced by clostridium. It is a potentially lethal disease which spreads quickly in soft tissues of the body.
Tissue necrosis id due to production of exotoxins by spore forming gas producing bacteria in an environment of low oxygen.
Herein we report two cases of perineal gas gangrene which were treated early with surgical debridement, antibiotics and hyperbaroxygenotherapy. Additionally, a review of the literature regarding gas gangrene is presented.
A 57 –year-old male presented to the emergency department reporting three days of worsening perineal and scrotal pain and swelling. He denied diabetes or trauma. His genitourinary examination revealed a draining lesion in his left inguinal region with surrounding indurations and cellulites extending onto his scrotum. His perineum was edematous and tender with a distinct region of ecchymosis and crepitus. The patient’s blood pressure was 100/56 mmhg; his body temperature rose to 39°C. The laboratory data demonstrated severe infection with white blood cell count of 27000/mm3, a C-reactive protein level of 158mg/dl and a blood sugar level of 14,09mmom/L. Computed tomography showed a perineal collection extended to the left ischio rectal region with emphysematous gangrene extended to the pelvis among the left iliac muscle and to the left inguinal region (Fig. 1). These results confirmed a diagnosis of gas gangrene of the perineum due to ischio rectal abscess. Shortly after arrival, the patient was transferred to the operating room for surgical debridement (Fig.2) with broad spectrum antibiotics (intravenous ampicillin-Sulbactam and metronidazole). Blood cultures were negative, and Gram stain of pus and necrotic tissue showed Gram positive rods, which were later confirmed as C. Perfingens. The patient was also treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy postoperatively. We began HBOT five days after surgical debridement. He was exposed to pure oxygen at 2, 5 atmospheres absolute pressure for 100 to 120 min. This procedure was repeated three times weekly for one month.He had an uneventful recovery and was discharged after 15 days of hospitalization.

Perineal gangrene: Aggressive approach with extended surgical excision.
A 45-year-male was admitted with a three-day history of persistent perineal pain after initial intervention for anal abscess. There was no medical history of diabetes or others abnormalities.On examination, he was normotensive, tachycardic, and pyrexial at 39, 4°C. Cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological examinations were no contributory. Abdominal examination revealed a non tender abdomen with no sign of peritonism. A balloon-like induration with retract-pain was found in the perineum and extended to the left scrotum with redness of the skin. Manual rectal examination demonstrated a very tender rectum. Blood tests revealed a slightly elevated white blood cell count of 11700/mm3, a C-reactive protein level of 118mg/dl and serum glucose was normal. A CT pelvis demonstrated collection in the bilateral ischio-rectal fossa, with gas in the perirectal region extended to the high pelvis (Fig.3). Theses appearances were consistent with those of gas gangrene. The patient was commenced on IV benzylpznicillin, metronidazole with aggressive fluid resuscitation and was immediately subjected to wide debridement, necrotic tissues excision. Examination of the rectum revealed bilateral ischiorectal abscess, which were drained and necessitated a temporary diverting colostomy. Culture of tissue specimens obtained intraopeartively was negative. Postoperatively he remained septicaemic, inotrope dependent, and ventilated for the next three days. Daily surgical debridement with resection of additional necrotic tissue was performed with two times performed in the operating room under general anesthesia.. Over the next 8 days, he gradually improved, and weaned off the inotropes. Treatment was continued with tazocillin-metronidazone for two weeks. Additionally, hyperbaric oxygen therapy was performed starting two weeks after the operation for three weeks. We performed the same protocol like the first case reported. He was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 40 with satisfactory and progressive healing of the injured wound. The patient successfully recovered within three months after the initial operation.

Gas gangrene and perineal necrotizing fasciitis or Fournier’s gangrene are rare but serious infections with acute onset, rapid progression, systemic toxemia and a high mortality rate [1,2]. It is defined as a synergistic, polymicrobial necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal, perirectal or genital area. The bacterial synergism of aerobic and anaerobic organisms, indigenous commensal below the pelvic diaphragm, results in the production of exotoxins that lead to tissue necrosis and the synthesis of insoluble substances gases that give rise to the characteristic, though not constant, subcutaneous emphysema of perineal gas gangrene or Fournier gangrene [1-5].
It is well known that usual causative organisms in gas gangrene are clostridial species. However, a variety of other organisms: coliforms, anaerobic streptococci, and bacteriodes may also produce infection in which gas is demonstrable. Fermentation of glucose in tissues is thought to be the source of the gas in gangrenous infections.
The most common predisposing factors are diabetes mellitus and alcohol abuse [1,5-9].In a review of 1726 cases, published in the literature, diabetes mellitus was a factor in 20% [1]. Others important predisposing factors include indwelling catheters, localized trauma, surgical procedure, malignancy, steroids, chemotherapy and human immunodeficiency virus [9-13].
Nowadays, the cause of this perineal gangrene is usually identified, with only 10% of cases being idiopathic. The necrotizing process commonly originates with an infection in the anorectum, the urogenital tract, or the skin. The disease is most often due to a local infection adjacent to a point of entry, including abscess (particularly in the perineal, perirectal, and ischio rectal regions), anal fissures and colonic perforations [1, 5, 7, 14, 15]. It has also been reported secondary to rectal carcinoma and diverticulitis. The urologic forms include urethral strictures, chronic urinary tract infection, and epididimitis. Insect bites, burns, trauma, and circoncision, have been reported as causes of pediatric Fournier gangrene, which is rarely seen [14].
Pain is a common presenting complaint and may be the first sign in patients with gas gangrene. Bullae and the bluish skin discoloration are classic findings. Edema and crepitus are usually present at the time of diagnosis. The triad of pain, tachycardia out of proportion to fever and crepitus is highly suggestive of clostridialmyonecrosis. Crepitus is identified at physical examination in 19 -64% [14]. Soft-tissue gas may be present prior to the detection of clinical crepitus.Fournier gangrene is classically associated with ecchymotic changes, edema, erythamatous and drainage from wounds.Systemic findings may include leukocytosis, dehydratation, tachycardia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and hyperglycemia [3, 6, 14, 15].
Perineal gas gangrene tends to be polymicrobial in nature, with synergy of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. The most commonly found bacteria are Escherichia Coli, followed by Bacteriodes and Streptococcal species. Other bacteria involved include Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Clostridium, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and proteus species [1, 8, 10, 14].
Infection in perineal gas gangrene tends to spread along the fascial plans. Infection arising from the anal triangle can spread along the Colles fascia (superficial perineal fascia) and progress anteriorly along the Dartos fascia to involve the scrotum and penis. It can pass also superiorly along the Scarpa fascia to involve the anterior abdominal wall. If the Colles fascia is interrupted, the infection can spread to the ischiorectal fossa and subsequently to the buttocks and thighs [14].
Although the diagnosis of gas gangrene is often made clinically, emergency computed tomography (CT) can lead to early diagnosis with accurate assessment of disease extent. CT not only helps evaluate the perineal structures that become involved by gangrene, but also helps assess the retroperitoneum; to which the disease can spread[14,15]. Findings at CT include asymetricfascialthickening, subcutaneous emphysema, fluid collections, and abscess formation. Subcutaneous emphysema is the hallmark of gas gangrene but is not seen in all cases.
Initial plain film may show moderate –to - large amounts of soft tissue gas. At radiography, hyperleucencies representing soft tissue gas may be seen in the region overlying the scrotum and perineum. Radiographic evidence of soft tissue gas may be present before clinical crepitus is detected, and its absence at physical examination should not exclude the diagnosis of Fournier gangrene. Ultrasonography (US) can be used to detect fluid or gas within the soft tissue. The thickened scrotal wall contains hyperchoic foci that demonstrate reverberation artifact [14-17].
CT imaging can detect smaller amounts of soft tissue gas than plain radiographs and can demonstrate fluid collections that track along the deep fascial planes. It often demonstrate the underlying cause of Fournier gangrenesuch as perineal abscesses, fistulous tracts, incarcerated inguinal hernias, and sources of infection due to intra-abdominal and retroperitoneal processes.
The management included surgical debridement of the necrotic tissue with incisions and drainage of the involved areas, antibiotic therapy and surgical intensive care [1, 5, 8, 14-20]. Early diagnosis and aggressive management are essential as overwhelming sepsis may quickly develop and is associated with a significant mortality rate reported as 16% in the Meta analysis of Eke [1]. The Fournier’s gangrene severity index (FGSI) score is a numeric score proposed by Laor et al in 1995 to prognosticate on the outcome of the disease [4, 10, 21-22]. It is obtained from a combination of admission physiologic parameters, including temperature, heart and respiration rates, sodium, potassium, creatinine, WBC counts, hematocrit, and sodium bicarbonates. It has been proposed that a FGSI score> 9indicates a 75% probability of mortality and score < 9 is associated with a 78% probability of survival [21].
The radical removal of all necrotic tissue at the first operation is crucial to the survival of the patient. A second look operation should be performed at 24-48 hours to ensure that all necrotic tissue has been cleared. Multiple debridements may be necessary to remove all nonviable tissue.Patients with incomplete drainage and debridement or who undergo treatment with antibiotics alone have a poor prognosis [1, 18, 21, 22].
Antibiotic choice is variable and may be institutionally dependent. Prompt initiation of antimicrobial treatment covering arobic and anaeorobic organism is critical. Ampicillin-sulbactam or piperacillin-tazobactam or ticarcillin-clavulateare suggested empiric regimens, whereas antibiotic treatment should be tailored according to the susceptibility results. Neutralization of clostridial or streptococcal circulating toxins by the use of intravenous immune globulin has shown promising results but there are no data to support strong recommendations for its regular use in patients with gas gangrene [6].
Some authors have demonstrated that sugars (sucrose, glucose) inhibited the production of the main protein toxin (alpha toxin, theta toxin), responsible for the onset and progression of gas gangrene [23].
Adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been shown to increase survival in animal model and in humans, to suppress alpha toxin of clostridium, enhance leukocyte-killing activity, enhance destruction of anaerobic bacteria and improve tissue repair in poorly vascularized tissues [1,18,24,25]. HBOT has shown some promise in shortening hospital stay, increasing wound healing, and decreasing the gangrenous spread in conjunction with surgical debridement and antibiotics. It may decrease the number of debridement required. It increases tissue oxygen issue tension to a high level that in turn inhibits and kills anaerobic bacteria while suppressing aerobic bacteria proliferation [6,14, 24, 25].
After healthy granulation has appeared, the healing time can be shortened with reconstructive procedures.
Gas gangrene of the genitalia and perineum continues to be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Physician and emergency medicine personnel should always maintain high index of suspicion of this severe infection even in the absence of diabetes or others co morbidities and predisposing factors. CT scan defines the extent of the disease and is of greatest benefit in planning the surgical debridement. Early diagnosis and complete surgical debridement of all necrosis tissue are the most important prognostic factors. In addition, we may also consider consulting for HBOT and intensive care if appropriate.

In the 1960s, Orson Anderson established a new laboratory at Columbia University’s Lamont Geological Observatory and chose to name it “Mineral Physics.” Experiments in his laboratory measured mineral properties over the wide range of pressures, temperatures and chemical compositions seen in the interior of Earth and other terrestrial planets. These studies included properties of minerals, but all materials related to natural minerals (e.g., structural analogs, but also glasses, melts and fluids). According to Robert Hazen [1], “mineral physics is the study of mineralogical problems through the application of condensed matter physics”. In reality, mineral physicists use not only physics but also solid-state chemistry. Knowledge of these properties is essential to interpretations of seismic data accurately and performing realistic geodynamic simulations. Today, mineral physics is widely considered one of the three pillars of geophysics, along with geodynamics and seismology.
Today, scientists approach these problems through a combination of experimental and computational methods. Precise information at lower pressures and temperatures is provided by experiments, and detailed information at conditions difficult to re-created in the laboratory is provided by computational work. Bulk material properties are vital to understanding the behavior of planets, but atomistic inspection of these complex materials provides a connection to planetary-scale phenomena. Theoretical mineral physicists are in a unique to position to illuminate this connection [2] (see also paragraph by Taku Tsuchiya below).
In the past half century since the first scientific conference focused on mineral physics was held in 1977, mineral physics has matured into an independent scientific discipline firmly in the mainstream of geosciences. Now mineral physicists are faced with many challenging problems and many exciting opportunities for research; in large measure, this is now possible due to access to synchrotron X-radiation facilities throughout the world. This evolution is highlighted in this chapter (see also our earlier paper [3]).
Long before seismology became a recognized discipline early in the 20th century, many scientists and philosophers had speculated on the nature of the interior of Earth. One of the earliest of these was Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) whose view of Earth (Figure 1) was published in 1665 and entitled: Mundus Subterraneus [4].

Over the subsequent three centuries as more detailed information became available from improved scientific methods, especially in seismology, our view of the interior of Earth has evolved, but major features have remained unchanged (Figure 2).

Harvard University faculty dominated investigations of the problems related to mineral physics in the first half of the 20th century. The first was Percy Bridgman whose investigations of the properties if matter under high pressure earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1946. Among the graduate students of Bridgman was Francis Birch, who focused on high-pressure studies relevant to geophysical problems. In his classical paper in 1952 [5], he demonstrated that the mantle is predominately composed of silicate minerals and that the upper mantle and lower mantle regions, each essentially homogeneous but of somewhat differing compositions, are separated by a thin transition zone associated with silicate phase transitions (see green band at 670 km in Figure 3). Birch also concluded that the inner and outer core are alloys of crystalline and molten iron, respectively, which contrasted with the prevailing views at the time. Although a few refinements have become necessary in light of subsequent research, the essential details of this model are still valid. For this paper and other contributions, Birch is widely acknowledged as the “father of mineral physics” (though he never used that term).
Internal structure and composition of the Earth’s interior.
Over the last four decades of the 20th century, many laboratories in the United States, Japan, Australia and France began to conduct experiments on the physical properties of minerals at high pressures and temperatures. These laboratories focused their research on understanding the role of fundamental properties of minerals and thus provided links to other disciplines of the geosciences such as seismology, tectonophysics, volcanology, geochemistry and petrology. These links are graphically illustrated by Figure 4.

In the past 50+ years, two major static high-pressure techniques have been developed in mineral physics laboratories by earth scientists desiring to replicate in the laboratory the P–T conditions of Earth’s deep interior: the diamond-anvil cell (DAC) and the multi-anvil apparatus (MAA). These two static technique are both useful and very complementary, although have occasionally been viewed as competitive. Higher pressures and large sample volumes can be achieved either through the use of larger tonnage hydraulic rams in MAAs or by increasing the culet size of DACs, and thus experimental conditions of the two techniques will eventually merge.
The diamond-anvil cell (DAC) was invented at the National Bureau of Standards [NBS] under the direction of Alvin Van Valkenburg and his colleagues in 1958. For the subsequent developments of the DAC, see the excellent review by William Bassett [6]. In the same time period, Tracy Hall invented the first multi-anvil apparatus, a tetrahedral-anvil machine; such MAA have evolved progressively [7] and can now achieve pressures close to 100 GPa at high temperatures. With the advent of synchrotron radiation facilities in the early 1980s, many of these DAC and MAA devices have been utilized in conjunction with

In Figure 6, the regions of the Earth’s interior (Crust, Upper mantle, Lower mantle, Outer core and Inner core) accessible to difference types of high-pressure apparatus: Belt, Split-Sphere, DIA and DAC are illustrated.

With the aid of high-pressure devices such as diamond anvil cells and multi-anvil apparatus, scientists have been able to explore the crystallographic transformations which the principal minerals of the upper mantle undergo as they are buried deeper in the Earth’s interior. Thus, olivine, garnet, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene of the upper mantle evolve to mixtures of (Mg, Fe)O-ferropericlase and Ca- and (Mg, Fe, Al)-SiO3-perovskites [the latter recently named bridgmanite] in the lower mantle. In the vicinity of the outer core, the bridgmanite transforms to a post-perovskite phase which has not yet been found in nature (see Figure 7a, courtesy of Stas Sinogeikin and Figure 7b, courtesy of Nick Schmerr and Ed Garnero).

In addition to experiments using static multi-anvil apparatus or diamond anvil cells, many scientists have utilized dynamic shock wave techniques to measure the physical properties of minerals at high pressures and temperatures. In Figure 8, the shock wave gun at Caltech is shown; it was originally built by Thomas Ahrens and is now under the supervision of Paul Asimow.

Experimental physical acoustics has been used to study the elastic properties of minerals. These high-precision techniques provide measurements of the velocity of sound in single crystals or polycrystalline aggregates (i.e., rocks) as functions of pressure and temperature.
There are several goals of such research in geophysics:
To study the relationship of the elastic properties to crystallographic structure and composition.
To provide the input parameters for theoretical equations of state of solids to enable these ultrasonic data to be extrapolated to higher pressures and temperatures, and
To deduce the composition and mineralogy of the Earth’s interior from a comparison of the laboratory data with the velocity-depth profiles in the Earth derived from seismology.
Our recent paper [8] summarizes the current state-of-the-art in studies of the Earth’s interior using measurements of sound velocities in minerals by ultrasonic interferometry. In that paper, we reviewed the progress of the technology of ultrasonic interferometry from the early 1950s to the present day. During this period of more than 60 years, sound wave velocity measurements have been increased from pressures less than 1 GPa and temperatures less than 800 K to conditions above 25 GPa and temperatures of 1800 K. This is complimentary to other direct methods to measure sound velocities (such as Brillouin spectroscopy and impulsive stimulated scattering) as well as indirect methods (e.g., resonance ultra- sound spectroscopy, static or shock compression, inelastic X-ray scattering). These sound velocity data are important in enabling scientists to interpret seismic data for the Earth’s interior. Two of the most popular global seismic models are PREM and AK135 [10, 11] are plotted in Figure 9; these models include some distinct features including a low velocity zone around 80 km–150 km, jumps at 410- and 670-km depths, and high velocity gradients in the transition zone. In addition, regional seismic studies also revealed discontinuities at 520 km as well as at depths of 250 km–340 km (X discontinuity). Also plotted are phase transitions as possible causes of these velocity anomalies in a pyrolytic mantle compositional model (See Figure 9 and Figures 3 and 7a and b above).

In early 2019, I wrote a paper entitled “The Orson Anderson Era of Mineral Physics at Lamont in the 1960s”, and began to explore options for its publication. When the Assistant Editor for Minerals, Ms. Jingjing Yang, agreed to consider my paper, she also inquired as to whether I would like to the be the Guest Editor for a Special Issue in honor of Orson Anderson. After asking prospective authors about the viability of such a Special Issue, I accepted her invitation, with the hope and expectation that it would be a wonderful present for his 95th birthday. This Special Issue is the result [12]. It contains original scientific papers, as well as historical reviews of the field of mineral physics (and also rock physics).
The papers in this Special Issue are grouped into four categories: Reviews, Experimental Science, Theoretical Science and Technological Developments. These papers include those from; first authors covering five generations of mineral physicists, including contemporaries of Orson, the next generation of leaders in mineral physics throughout the world, current leaders in the field, senior graduate students, and an undergraduate student (i.e., Tyler Perez). Note that Tyler, a student of Jennifer Jackson at Caltech, is an academic great-great grandson of Orson Anderson (Anderson > Liebermann > Bass > J. Jackson > Perez).

It functions as a redox buffer which can reduce, and thereby neutralize, reactive oxygen species. It is a cofactor for enzymes involved in regulating photosynthesis, hormone biosynthesis, and regenerating other antioxidants; which also regulates cell division and growth, is involved in signal transduction, and has roles in several physiological processes, such as immune stimulation, synthesis of collagen, hormones, neurotransmitters, and iron absorption, has also roles in detoxifying the body of heavy metals. Severe deficiency of vitamin C causes scurvy, whereas limited vitamin C intake causes symptoms, such as increased susceptibility to infections, loosening of teeth, dryness of the mouth and eyes, loss of hair, dry itchy skin, fatigue, and insomnia. In contrast, vitamin C can also act as a prooxidant, especially in the presence of transition metals, such as iron and copper, starting different hazardous radical reactions. Vitamin C can both act as a strong, efficient, and cheap antioxidant agent and, at the same time, behave as a radical promoter. The problem is particularly severe in populations where rice is the staple food and diversity of diet is limited, as white rice contains no micronutrients. Golden Rice is a public-sector product designed as an additional intervention for VAD. There will be no charge for the nutritional trait, which has been donated by its inventors for use in public-sector rice varieties to assist the resource poor, and no limitations on what small farmers can do with the crop—saving and replanting seed, selling seed and selling grain are all possible. Because Golden Rice had to be created by introducing two new genes—one from maize and the other from a very commonly ingested soil bacterium—it has taken a long time to get from the laboratory to the field. Now it has been formally registered as safe as food, feed, or in processed form by four industrialised counties, and applications are pending in developing countries. The data are summarised here, and criticisms addressed, for a public health professional audience: is it needed, will it work, is it safe and is it economic? Adoption of Golden Rice, the next step after in-country registration, requires strategic and tactical cooperation across professions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government departments often not used to working together. The novel paradigm is to investigate the potential of thiamine as a crop protection molecule in plants. Thiamine or vitamin B1 is important for primary metabolism for all living organisms. The active form, thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), is a cofactor for the enzymes involved in the synthesis of amino acids, tricarboxylic acid cycle and pentose phosphate pathway. Recently, thiamine is shown to have a role in the processes underlying protection of plants against biotic and abiotic stresses. The aim of this chapter is to review the role of thiamine in plant growth and disease protection and also to highlight that TPP and its intermediates are involved in management of stress. It is a cofactor for enzymes involved in regulating photosynthesis, hormone biosynthesis, and regenerating other antioxidants; which also regulates cell division and growth, is involved in signal transduction, and has roles in several physiological processes, such as immune stimulation, synthesis of collagen, hormones, neurotransmitters, and iron absorption, has also roles in detoxifying the body of heavy metals. Severe deficiency of vitamin C causes scurvy, whereas limited vitamin C intake causes symptoms, such as increased susceptibility to infections, loosening of teeth, dryness of the mouth and eyes, loss of hair, dry itchy skin, fatigue, and insomnia. In contrast, vitamin C can also act as a prooxidant, especially in the presence of transition metals, such as iron and copper, starting different hazardous radical reactions. The product of hydroxylation is hormone-active form of vitamin D–1,25(OH)2D. 1,25(OH)2D binds to specific vitamin D receptor (VDR) and regulates the expression of genes involved in bone remodeling (classical function) and genes that control immune response, hormone secretion, cell proliferation, and differentiation (nonclassical functions). VD deficiency is prevalent around the globe and may be one of the key factors for diabetes development. The direct association between vitamin D deficiency and type 1 (T1D) and type 2 (T2D) diabetes has been proven. Detection of VDR in pancreas and adipose tissue, skeletal muscles, and immune cells allowed implying the antidiabetic role of vitamin D by enhancing insulin synthesis and exocytosis, increasing the expression of the insulin receptor, and modulating immune cells’ functions. She obtained a BSc from the University of Derby, England, a master’s degree from Technische Universität München, Germany, and a Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham. She undertook a post-doctoral research fellowship in the School of Medicine before accepting tenure in Veterinary Medicine and Science. Dr. Rutland also obtained an MMedSci (Medical Education) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE). She is the author of more than sixty peer-reviewed journal articles, twelve books/book chapters, and more than 100 research abstracts in cardiovascular biology and oncology. She is a board member of the European Association of Veterinary Anatomists, Fellow of the Anatomical Society, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. After his studies, he chose an academic career and devoted his energy to the teaching of physics to first, second, and third-year students. After positions as a lecturer at the University of Port Elizabeth, he accepted a position as Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.\r\n\r\nIn 1992, he motivates the concept of 'television and computer-based education” as means to reach large student numbers with only the best of teaching expertise and publishes an article on the concept in the SA Journal of Higher Education of 1993 (and later in 2003). The University of Pretoria subsequently approved a series of test projects on the concept with outreach to Mamelodi and Eerste Rust in 1993. In 1994, the University established a 'Unit for Telematic Education ' as a support section for multiple faculties at the University of Pretoria. In subsequent years, the concept of 'telematic education” subsequently becomes well established in academic circles in South Africa, grew in popularity, and is adopted by many universities and colleges throughout South Africa as a medium of enhancing education and training, as a method to reaching out to far out communities, and as a means to enhance study from the home environment.\r\n\r\nProfessor Snyman in subsequent years pursued research in semiconductor physics, semiconductor devices, microelectronics, and optoelectronics.\r\n\r\nIn 2000 he joined the TUT as a full professor. Here served for a period as head of the Department of Electronic Engineering. Students are allocated to projects at different levels with PhDs and Master students allocated to the generation of new knowledge and new technologies, while students at the diploma and Baccalaureus level are allocated to electronic systems development with a direct and a near application for application in industry or the commercial and public sectors in South Africa.\r\n\r\nProfessor Snyman received the WIRSAM Award of 1983 and the WIRSAM Award in 1985 in South Africa for best research papers by a young scientist at two international conferences on electron microscopy in South Africa. He subsequently received the SA Microelectronics Award for the best dissertation emanating from studies executed at a South African university in the field of Physics and Microelectronics in South Africa in 1987.
