I am an Associate Professor in Psychiatry at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. Trained as an experimental psychologist with a focus on learning and behavior, my research examines the effects of acute and chronic psychological stress on neurobiological systems. As head of the Biological Core for the Center for Culture, Trauma and Mental Health Disparities (CCTMHD) at UCLA, I am also directing the collection, analysis and interpretation of aggregate biomarker data from more than 500 racial/ethnic minorities with trauma histories and associated PTSD and depression. I am interested in studies designed to identify risk and protective factors of trauma-related psychobiological dysregulation so that prevention and treatment interventions can target those most vulnerable to health-threatening neurobiological consequences.
