George Barreto

Dr. Barreto received a bachelors degree in Physical Therapy from Tiradentes University with Honors, Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil, and later completed his Specialization in Physical Therapy in Pneumology in 2003. In 2005 he received his Master´s Degree in Health Sciences (Biochemistry), and then his PhD in Neurosciences from Complutense University (Madrid) with Honors (summa cum laude) in 2009. He was a Postdoctoral Scholar Fellow from the Department of Anesthesia, Stanford University School of Medicine in 2009-2011. He has extensive experience in animal models of brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases, immunohistochemistry, unbiased stereological methods, molecular biology, cell culture, confocal microscopy, western blotting, and protein extraction techniques. His expertise is in astrocyte-neuronal crosstalk as a neuroprotective strategy, and the role of astrocytes activation in brain injury and glucose deprivation models.
