Pawan Sharma
Pawan Sharma (b. 1951) earned his Ph.D. (Parasite Immunology) from Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow (India) in 1980. He was a post-doctoral scientist at the Scripps Clinic Research Institute, La Jolla, CA (USA), and a Visiting Scientist at the Agouron Institute, La Jolla, CA. He served as a senior level Staff Research Scientist at ICGEB, New Delhi (India) from Feb 1989 - Aug 2011, his area of research being Medical Microbiology and Molecular Immunology. His professional expertise is in molecular immunology; cell biology of host-pathogen interaction; synthetic peptide vaccines; molecular cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins; DNA vaccines; animal experimentation in TB vaccine and drug discovery research. He has established a state-of-the-art, DBT-funded national aerosol challenge facility for tuberculosis research in India. He has more than 85 research papers in journals of international repute (PNAS-USA, J Immunol, PLoS ONE, PLoS Pathogens, Infection & Immunity, JID, MAI, Tuberculosis (Edin.), Imm Cell Biol, IJMR, IJEB etc) addressing scientific problems in tuberculosis, malaria, leishmaniasis, and amebiasis. He is currently a Senior Consultant-Healthcare with the North Eastern Region Biotechnology Program Management Cell (NER-BPMC) of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India. He also serves on several Task Force Committees of DBT. For his scientific contributions, Pawan Sharma was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (London) in 1983, and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) (Allahabad) in 2002.
