María José Figueras, Ph.D. Professor of Microbiology at the Univerity Rovira & Virgili (URV). Since 1990 she has been working in the field of health-related environmental microbiology, especially in the contamination of water. She has participated in several European research projects Aqua-Chip, Healthy-Water, Epibathe, Virobathe, Viroclime and Aquavalens. She has been an advisor on the management of risk derived from contaminated bathing waters for the Catalan Water Agency of the Environmental Department, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), and the European Commission on several occasions. She has directed several Ph.D. theses on the taxonomy and epidemiology of Aeromonas and Arcobacter, published over 190 peer-reviewed articles, and several book chapters. Spanish Ambassador of the America Society of Microbiology and first female rector at the URV from 2018 to 2022.
