Jorge António Ribeiro Salvador

University of Coimbra

Jorge A.R. Salvador has a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, a Master degree in Organic & Tecnological Chemistry, and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He has a position as Full Professor at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra, Portugal and is a Non-Executive Member of the Board of CHEM4PHARMA, a start-up Pharmaceutical Company located in Portugal. His research activity has been focused on the development of new drugs, mainly for cancer treatment. He has published more than 90 SCI journal papers, 12 book chapters and 10 patents (2 US-Patents). In addition, he is the author/co-author of 220 presentations in national and international conferences and workshops. Over the last years he has conducted several research projects in the field of pharmaceutical/medicinal chemistry which has contribute to his significant expertise in drug discovery.

The steroid scaffold continues to be the structural basis of new drugs for a variety of targets and diseases. Indeed, steroids interact with enzymes and receptors in a strikingly specific manner. Chemistry and Biological Activity of Steroids aims to provide an updated overview of recent advances in the medicinal chemistry of steroids. Novel synthetic methods in the steroids field, including steroid biotransformations, new steroids able to tackle steroid receptors, and steroid enzymes with clinical relevance, are critically reviewed in this book. Furthermore, the diverse physiopathological roles of oxysterols and their therapeutic value are also discussed.

Recent Highlights in Green Oxidative Chemical Processes Applied to Steroid Chemistry

Steroids and their oxidation products are widely distributed in living organisms and are important intermediates for the synthesis of many biologically active molecules. Due to their pharmacological and synthetic relevance, several oxidative chemical processes for the functionalization of the steroid nucleus have been developed. Green chemistry principles have been incorporated in some oxidative transformations of steroids, allowing significant advances in synthetic chemistry applied to these compounds. This chapter presents a selection of relevant applications of pharmaceutical green chemistry to steroid’s oxidative processes. Special emphasis is given to catalytic processes encompassing heterogeneous nanocatalysts, whose application in this context is increasing over the past years. This chapter is organized according to the reaction type that includes alcohol oxidation, epoxidation of alkenes, and allylic oxidation of alkenes to enones, among other relevant oxidative transformations. Biocatalytic oxidative methods applied to steroid synthesis are not included in this review.
