José Simão Antunes Do Carmo

José Simão Antunes Do Carmo was born in Coimbra, Portugal, on January 30, 1956. He completed his M.Sc. in Hydraulics and Water Resources at the University of Lisbon in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences, Civil Engineering – Hydraulics, at the University of Coimbra in 1995. He is Associate Professor at the University of Coimbra since 2005. He was a member of the Scientific Committee of about forty International Conferences, President or a Member of the Organizing Committee of about thirty International Conferences, and Invited Speaker in over thirty Seminars/Conferences. He collaborates regularly with several International Journals in reviewing papers submitted for publication. He has published sixty papers in scientific peer review Journals, eleven book-chapters of International Editions, and two books on Fluvial Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering. He Co-Edited six books in the areas of Water Quality, Water Pollution and Watershed Management, Modelling, Planning and Coastal Zone Management.

This book addresses different aspects of natural hazards and vulnerabilities, with a focus on prevention and protection. It consists of nine chapters, five on flood events addressing vulnerabilities, risk assessments, impacts, sensitivity analyses, and mitigation measures, two on climate change and reconstruction of natural hazard events such as avalanches and rockslides, and two on tsunamis and volcanoes. All chapters provide relevant information and useful elements for readers interested and concerned about the lack of action or its ineffectiveness in containing the vulnerabilities and risks of possible natural hazards worldwide.
