Senior Researcher

Denise Maria Zezell is graduated in Physics from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) Brazil, in 1984, where she received the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. degree (1991) for the study of optical properties of hematoporphyrin during Photodynamic Therapy of Tumors. Denise Maria Zezell participated in several courses in Medical Physics at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, UNESCO) in Trieste, Italy. From 1996 to 1998 Zezell served as a consultant to the International Centre for Science and High Technology (ICS) from United Nations for Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), lecturing in a series of training courses on laser applications, in Argentina, Peru, Brazil and Tunisia. In 2002 she was consultant scientist for Regional Dental Council (CRO-SP) for the São Paulo State. In May 2001, in Austria, she was awarded by the European Society for Lasers and Applications for her scientific research in caries prevention. In August 2002, in Japan, she won the Young Research Award from the International Society for Lasers in Dentistry, for her work on physical characterization of enamel irradiated by laser for caries prevention. In 2005 and 2006 she won 3 other international awards. In September 2005, in Austria, she was invited lecturer at the Photonics Institute, Vienna University of Technology as well as invited speaker at the International Symposium on Interdisciplinary Electromagnetics, Mechanics and Biomedical Problems. In May 2006 she participated in the scientific committee of the World Federation for Lasers in Dentistry meeting, in Berlin-Germany. In July 2007, in Romania, she was Invited Lecturer at the Lasers in Dentistry meeting of the European Society for Lasers and Applications. In April 2009, in Washington, she was Invited Speaker at Lasers in Dentistry section at the American Society for Lasers in Medicine and Surgery meeting. In May 2007 she was the President of the Condensed Matter Physics National Meeting (XXX ENFMC), the most representative Physics meeting in Brazil, organized by the Brazilian Physics Society (SBF), with about 30 international speakers and 1300 participants. She was Coordinator (2009-2012) and one of the responsible for the creation in 1999 of the Professional Master in Lasers in Dentistry, in collaboration with the School of Dentistry- University of São Paulo (USP), where she was lecturer for Laser-Tissue Interaction and Applications. She is enrolled in the USP undergraduate program, lecturing about Lasers in Life Sciences. She has scientific collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine- USP; School of Dentistry-USP; Hospital Sirio-Libanês and Faculty of Medicine from Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP); besides collaborations in Physics with Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Imperial College London and University of Durham, England; University of Aachen and University of Ulm- Germany among others. She is Senior Researcher at the Center for Lasers and Applications, at Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN-CNEN/SP) since 1992, where she was Vice-head of Graduation Program (2010-2014) and responsible for the Laboratory of Biophotonics and was vice-head of the laser applications division (2008, 2013). She was responsible for research project grants from Procad (034905-4 , 0156/01-9, ed 71/2013) Pro-equipamentos/CAPES(919/2010, 74742/2010, 3026/2011) and RHAE/CNPq (610035/99-1 ), as well as participates as a Principal Investigator at the Center for Optics and Photonics (CEPID/FAPESP 05/51689-2), National Institute of Photonics and Biophotonics (INCT-CNPq INFO 573916/2008-0), Millennium Institute (CNPq 420177/2005-1) and Nanophotonics Network (CNPq Nanophoton 555170/2005-5). She is referee for multidisciplinary scientific journals, including Journal of Biomedical Optics, Analyst, Journal of Endodontics, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, Lasers in Medical Sciences, as well as several other Applied Physics, Medical and Dental journals. She was awarded a CNPq – Research Productivity fellowship 1C, since October 2013. One of her patents is the pharmaceutical photosensitive composition and method for the treatment of skin and tumor cutaneous lesion in mammals (PI0705591-9). Main research activities are in Biophotonics, in the physical and chemical characterization of biological tissues irradiated by laser, aiming the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods in Medicine and Dentistry. Infrared thermography and micro-FTIR and Optical Coherence Tomography are the main techniques used. She authored or co-authored more than 130 journal papers, 2 patents, 1 book, 25 book chapters, and over 280 conference papers. According to the ISI Web of Science, her publications were cited more than 1100 times (h = 23). Detailed information regarding her publications is at http://lattes.cnpq.br/3524890504250775
