Gerard Stelma currently serves as a senior science advisor for the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) of EPA’s Office of Research and Development. NERL is responsible for research associated with the exposure component of the Risk Assessment Paradigm. The NERL mission in microbiology includes the development of methods to detect and measure hazardous microbes and their products in the environment, development of methods to measure biomarkers of exposure, measurement of the occurrence of hazardous microbes in the environment and measurement of populations exposed to microbes of interest to the EPA. Gerard began his federal career as a research microbiologist at the U. S. Food and Drug Administration’s research facility in Cincinnati, OH in 1978. In July,1987 he joined the EPA staff as a research microbiologist. He served as a branch chief from 1988 until 2001 and as an acting division director from 2002 until June of 2004. He received a B. S. from the University of Michigan in 1965 and a PhD in microbiology from Michigan State University in 1974. He was a postdoctoral research associate at Purdue University from 1974 until 1976 and at the University of Wisconsin from 1976 until 1978.
