Dr. Almeida is the Director of the recently established Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders Research & Rehabilitation Centre at Wilfrid Laurier University. This is a world-class center that focuses on finding a better understanding of the relationship between basal ganglia dysfunction and movement impairment, and also to scientifically evaluate and approve all exercise programs and assistive devices to be utilized by Canadians suffering with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. His research has been featured in the Toronto Star, the Globe & Mail, on CBC national news and Maclean\'s magazine, and in Grand Magazine. He is an expert in motor control, balance and gait assessment and exercise rehabilitation for Parkinson\'s disease. His research is currently funded by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and he has won several awards for his research on Parkinson\'s disease including the Franklin Henry Young Scientist Award for motor control in Canada, the Parkinson\'s Society of Canada Young Investigator\'s Award, the Petro-Canada Innovators Award. Recently he has been announced as the recipient of the Polanyi Prize for Physiology and Medicine, and recently selected as one of the Top 40 under 40 for Waterloo Region.
