Dr. Yan Li is a professor at the Engineering College, Northeast Agricultural University, China. He has more than 15 years of experience in research and teaching. His main research fields include energy engineering, agricultural engineering, and mechanical engineering. He teaches courses in introduction to new energy, fluid dynamics, and wind energy engineering for both undergraduate and graduate students. His current research focuses on renewable energy, especially wind energy. He has more than fifty publications on wind turbines, wind turbine icing, and anti-icing technology to his credit. He is a member of the Chinese Aerodynamics Research Society, Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics, and Chinese Wind Energy Association.

This book includes six chapters on wind turbine icing. For wind turbines operating in cold regions, icing often occurs on blade surfaces in winter. This ice accretion can change the aerodynamic shape of the blade airfoil, causing performance degradation and loss of power generation, even leading to operational accidents. This book focuses on the recent research progress on wind turbine icing. Chapters address such topics as the effect of icing conditions on the icing distribution characteristics of a blade airfoil for vertical-axis wind turbines, power loss estimation in wind turbines due to icing, wind turbine icing prediction methods, especially those using machine learning, the icing process of a single water droplet on a cold aluminum plate surface, the main theories of the icing adhesive mechanism, and theoretical and experimental studies on the ultrasonic de-icing method for wind turbine blades. This book is a valuable reference for researchers and engineers engaged in wind turbine icing and anti-icing research.

Straight-Bladed Vertical Axis Wind Turbines: History, Performance, and Applications

Wind turbine is a kind of rotating machinery. Although the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) is the most popular wind turbine, the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) with the main advantages of smart design, novel structure, and wind direction independence receives more and more attention in small-scale wind power market. The straight-bladed VAWT (SB-VAWT) is one of the most researched and studied VAWTs. In this chapter, the historical development of the SB-VAWT will be briefly reviewed firstly. Then the aerodynamic models for the turbine design and performance analysis will be introduced. Finally, the types of traditional and new SB-VAWT and their characteristics and main utilizations will be introduced.

Wind Tunnel Test of Icing Distribution on the Leading Edge of a 2D Blade Airfoil for Wind Turbines

As clean and renewable energy, wind energy has been widely used in the world. The wind turbine is a kind of rotating machinery, which can convert wind energy into mechanical energy and electrical energy. Wind turbines sometimes face a variety of extreme weather conditions, such as icing, heavy snow, lightning, sand storm, and so on, which affect the safety operation of wind turbines. In the present study, icing events on the blade surfaces of wind turbines are focused, and the wind tunnel test of icing was carried out on a 2D blade with NACA0018 airfoil used in wind turbines. In the icing tests, three kinds of ambient temperatures were selected, including −5 °C, −10 °C, and −15 °C, and two kinds of wind speeds were decided, including 5m/s and 10m/s. The icing distributions on the blade surface at the different attack angles were tested and recorded by a high-speed camera for several minutes. The ice accretion and distribution characteristics at the leading edge of the 2D blade airfoil were acquired and analyzed. The findings can provide a reference for the research on the icing mechanism and the de- and anti-icing of wind turbines.

A Brief Review of Blade Surface Icing Adhesive Theories for Wind Turbines

In cold and humid areas, ice easily accumulates on the blade surface of the wind turbine. The icing on the blade surface causes the power efficiency of wind turbines to decline, even leading to safety accidents. In order to research and develop efficient anti-icing and de-icing technologies, exploring the adhesive properties between ice and the blade surface is necessary. Therefore, in this paper, the main theories of the icing adhesive mechanism have been briefly summarized, including mechanical, electronic, and wetting theories, from the aspechts of theory and experimental research, which can provide a reference for researching icing mechanisms and the development of anti-icing and de-icing technologies for wind turbines.
