Mónica Moraes R.

Mónica Moraes Ramírez, Bolivian by birth, studied biology at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz and obtained both MSc (1989) and PhD (1996) at the University of Aarhus (Denmark). She has been a full-time professor of the UMSA Career since 1990 and took charge of the palm collection of the National Herbarium of Bolivia from 1984 to present. Since 2007 she is an emeritus teacher. As a botanist, she carried out research on flora and vegetation in the lowlands of Bolivia and has specialized in the study of native palms of Bolivia: She carried out studies on taxonomy of this group of plants, described three new palm species for Bolivia, researched on ecology, distribution, ethnobotany, conservation and management of palm trees. She has participated in 18 research projects and two of them are ongoing. She was director of the Institute of Ecology and the National Herbarium of Bolivia. She is Editor in Chief of the scientific journal 'Ecology in Bolivia' of the UMSA from 2001 to present. She was named as number academic at the Academy of Sciences of Bolivia in 2008. She is focal point for Bolivia in the Women for Science Program of the InterAmerican Association of Science Academies from November 2010 to present. Dr. Moraes is a member of the Latin American Botany Association (ALB); International Palm Society; Species Survival Commission of the IUCN: 1 Palm Specialist Group and 2 Trees Specialist Group; Organization for Neotropical Flora; World Taxonomist Database (WTD); Species Plantarum Program; Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He has received the 2006 Jubilee Award from the International Foundation for Science (Stockholm, Sweden); the award Prócer Pedro Domingo Murillo in the Degree of Civic Honor 2016, of the Municipal Council of La Paz; and recognition to the 'Grand Master in the Adela Zamudio degree', 2017, Chamber of Deputies, La Paz. Among her publications she has produced 18 edited books; 44 chapters of books; 61 scientific articles; 3 academic theses; 23 prologues, editorials and other publications; 70 summaries in scientific events; 18 guides and manuals. To date, she has oriented 58 undergraduate and graduate students of biology and agronomy.
