I am the Group Leader for the Hair Structure, Geometry, Biochemistry Research Group within the Hair and Skin Research Laboratory, University of Cape Town. My research focus is the use of hair in disease diagnosis. I lead several projects investigating the use of hair as a testing substrate for various applications including detection and monitoring of hyperglycemia in diabetic patients, using cortisol levels as an indicator of stress in patients with a recent myocardial infraction, using cortisol as an indicator of stress for alopecia areata and using hair to monitor drug compliance in HIV and TB patients. My group also do fundamental research on human hair and seek to understand the relationship between hair geometry, morphology, and biochemistry.
