Dr. Ludmila Otilia Cinteza is Associate Professor in the Physical Chemistry Department, University of Bucharest (Romania), with PhD in Chemistry from University of Bucharest (1999) and MPharm in Biopharmaceutics and Physical Chemistry of Drugs at University of Medicine and Pharmacy Carol Davila, Bucharest (2015). She is the head of the Colloids and Interface Group, where she works on different projects funded by national and international agencies. Her research interests include nanomedicine, controlled release and targeted drug delivery systems, inorganic nanoparticles as antimicrobials, quantum dots for bioimaging, superhydrophobic materials.

Synthesis and Nonlinear Studies on Selected Organic Compounds in Nanostructured Thin Films

Organic compounds based on ferrocene, pyrazolone, and octahydroacridine exhibit high interest due to their unusual structure, with potential practical applications due to their special optical properties. Nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of some new synthesized derivatives are evaluated in relationship with the chemical structure by using DFT molecular modeling. In condensed state, ferrocene and other organic molecules were found in a staggered arrangement (D5d) as a nonpolar molecule, but the eclipsed (D5h) and twisted (D5) forms exhibit SHG capabilities. The molecular polarizability (α), first-order hyperpolarizabilities (βtot), dipole (μtot), and quadrupole (Q) moments were computed. The NLO efficiency was assessed by the relationship between high (βtot) and low HOMO-LUMO energy gap. The nonlinear optical properties of some new synthesized compounds were evaluated in thin films with nanometric morphology obtained using various methods: Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) thin films, sol-gel deposition, and layer-by-layer deposition.

Synthesis and Functionalization of Nanoparticles in Supercritical CO₂

A review of recent results on fabrication of inorganic and organic nanoparticles in supercritical carbon dioxide will be presented, with particular emphasis on the metallic and polymeric nanoparticles used in biomedicine. The use of the water-in-scCO2 microemulsion in the synthesis of metal nanoparticles will be also discussed. The recent progress in preparation of polymeric nanoparticles with desired size and porosity obtained through processing methods in scCO2 as drug delivery systems will be described. The efficiency of the drug encapsulation in organic and inorganic nanoparticles using supercritical CO2 as dissolving media is another topic of interest. Various methods to achieve surface functionalization of nanoparticles in supercritical and subcritical CO2 will be evaluated, considering the challenges and limitations in efficiency, scalability, and development of new applications.

Multifunctional ZnO Nanoparticle: Based Coatings for Cultural Heritage Preventive Conservation

Coatings based on nanoparticles embedded in various filmogenic materials are still a hot topic in nanomaterial research, due to the exceptional variety of applications. The chapter present recent progress in synthesis and characterization of hybrid material with ZnO nanoparticles and their use as functional coatings for various substrates. The antibacterial and UV protection efficiency of ZnO nanoparticle-based coatings on paper and stone are discussed, with particular emphasize on the specific requirements for application in cultural heritage preventing conservation. Functional materials based on ZnO are presented as possible treatment for protection of historic and archaeological textiles and metal artifacts. Trends in environmental friendly methods to fabricate the ZnO nanoparticles will be evaluated, compared to classic ones, in terms of material characteristics and efficiency.
