Maria Marinescu received her PhD in 2010 from the University of Bucharest, under the supervision of Prof. Mihaela Hillebrand, studying the chemistry and the electronic structure of the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydroacridine compounds, as a key structures for the new biomolecules and hydrogen-bonding receptors. Dr Maria Marinescu is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Bucharest, Department of Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Catalysis and her current research interests are in organic synthesis of various heterocycles with applications in medicinal and materials chemistry, DFT studies in organic molecules related with their biological properties and applications of organic materials in art and archaeology.

Finding new strategies for synthesizing benzimidazole derivatives and functionalizing the benzimidazole core has proved to be important due to the compound's various applications in medicine, chemistry, and other areas. The multitude of benzimidazole derivatives marketed as drugs has led to intensive research in the field for the discovery of new biologically active structures. The general applications of benzimidazole derivatives in materials chemistry, electronics, technology, dyes, pigments, and agriculture open up new research horizons. This book guides the rational design of benzimidazole derivatives synthesis with certain applications. Chapters cover such topics as therapeutic use of benzimidazole in conditions like diabetes, viruses, and parasitic diseases; X-ray crystal structure of selected benzimidazole derivatives; benzimidazole compounds for cancer therapy; and others.

Synthesis and Nonlinear Studies on Selected Organic Compounds in Nanostructured Thin Films

Organic compounds based on ferrocene, pyrazolone, and octahydroacridine exhibit high interest due to their unusual structure, with potential practical applications due to their special optical properties. Nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of some new synthesized derivatives are evaluated in relationship with the chemical structure by using DFT molecular modeling. In condensed state, ferrocene and other organic molecules were found in a staggered arrangement (D5d) as a nonpolar molecule, but the eclipsed (D5h) and twisted (D5) forms exhibit SHG capabilities. The molecular polarizability (α), first-order hyperpolarizabilities (βtot), dipole (μtot), and quadrupole (Q) moments were computed. The NLO efficiency was assessed by the relationship between high (βtot) and low HOMO-LUMO energy gap. The nonlinear optical properties of some new synthesized compounds were evaluated in thin films with nanometric morphology obtained using various methods: Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) thin films, sol-gel deposition, and layer-by-layer deposition.

Synthesis and Nonlinear Optical Studies on Organic Compounds in Laser-Deposited Films

Organic semiconductors as active materials in thin-film electronic devices such as alkynes, heterocycles, dyes, ferrocenes, spiranes, or porphyrins, with special geometries and certain electronic molecular parameters, which possess nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and offer several major advantages over their inorganic counterparts, are presented in this chapter. There are a number of simple and versatile techniques that can be employed for the deposition of these important classes of materials. The matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) technique provides advantages with regard to making organic films of different morphologies on different types of substrates. New insights into the crystallization growth mechanisms in MAPLE-deposited conjugated polymer films, which realize the connection between the structure and the carrier transport properties, are discussed herein. Second harmonic generation (SHG) capabilities of the thin films were also investigated.
