General area: The Maupin-Furlow lab is investigating extremophiles of the domain Archaea. Our overall goals are to advance understanding of systems important to archaeal cell function and to develop useful tools for biotechnology. Archaeal systems under investigation include thiamine metabolism, protein quality control, sulfur mobilization, and oxidative stress response. Emphasis is on archaeal systems that are fundamentally conserved in eukaryotes. We are also advancing the use of extremophiles and their enzymes to optimize the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. To achieve these goals, we use cutting-edge techniques in biochemistry, molecular biology, proteomics, genetics, systems biology, and structural biology.
