Prof Mirjana Turkalj, MD, PhD is the Deputy Head at Srebrnjak Children’s Hospital, Zagreb, Croatia, and the Head of the Department of Pulmonology, Allergology and Immunology. She obtained her MD degree in 1987, MSc in 1994 and PhD degree in Biomedicine in 1998. She is an Allergy and Clinical Immunology specialist with 15+ years of experience in management and treatment of paediatric patients. She is a leading expert in Paediatric Pulmonology, Allergy and Immunology in Croatia and nearby region, and the Head of the Republic of Croatia Ministry of Health Reference Centre for clinical allergy in children. She has led and is leading a number of national and international (EU) research and translational projects (EU FP7 ATOPICA- PI, EU FP7 IFAAM- PI, Croatian MSE „Early biomarkers of allergic diseases in children'-PI, Croatian MSE 'Scientific Centre of Excellence in Personalized Medicine”- PI, EU ERDF CCTM- PI, Croatian Islands\' Birth cohort Study (CRIBS), Croatian MSE 'MicroEquilibrium ', etc. She is a member of the Board of the Croatian Cluster of Competitiveness for Personalized Medicine, a member of the Scientific Council for Anthropological Research of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a member of the Scientific Board of the Croatian Food Agency. Dr .Turkalj is involved in basic and applied biomedical (translational) research, primarily in the area of chronic non-infectious diseases in the paediatric population, aiming at the identification of early biomarkers for risk of chronic non-communicable and rare diseases (such as asthma, food allergy, primary immunodeficiency ), including genetic and epigenetic mechanisms influenced by the changing environment and lifestyle. Dr. Turkalj has co-authored more than 60 scientific publications. She is a mentor for MD interns, at postgraduate courses in Pediatrics and of several MSc and PhD theses. She is a lecturer at a number of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate courses at several academic institutions in Croatia and an invited lecturer at several international congresses and symposiums. She is an acting member of several expert organizations (EAACI, ERS, Croatian Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology, Croatian Society for Human Genetics, Croatian Society for Ecology, etc.) and a PI on several clinical studies.
