Charles J. Mode

Charles J. Mode received a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, which also entailed course work at the University of California, Berkeley. While at the University of California, he also studied Mathematics and Theoretical Statistics. During 1956-57 he studied Statistical Genetics while on a postdoctoral fellowship at North Carolina State University and spent the spring semester of 1957 at the University of Florida, Gainsville, teaching a course in Experimental Design to Graduate Students in Agronomy. For the rest of his active career he has served in either Departments of Mathematics or Statistics. In 1970 accepted a position in the Department of Mathematics, Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he is now a Professor Emeritus. He is the author of numerous papers published in scientific journals and is also the author of three books: Multi-Type Branching Processes (1971), Stochastic Processes in Demography (1985) and Stochastic Processes in Epidemiology (2000). Throughout his career, he has maintained an interest in Genetics and Evolution and in 2004 gave a reading course in Mathematical Genetics to a talented graduate student that stimulated him to resume work in Genetics and Evolution which led him to write his latest book on Stochastic Processes in Genetics and Evolution, which will be published in 2011.

This volume is an eclectic mix of applications of Monte Carlo methods in many fields of research should not be surprising, because of the ubiquitous use of these methods in many fields of human endeavor. In an attempt to focus attention on a manageable set of applications, the main thrust of this book is to emphasize applications of Monte Carlo simulation methods in biology and medicine.
