Mazhar Ali

Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics

Mazhar Ali did his undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley where he obtained degrees in both Physics and Chemistry before moving on the Princeton University where he completed his PhD in Chemistry and Materials Science. He did a PostDoc at IBM Almaden in California before accepting the Alexander von Humbdolt Sofia Kovalevskaja Award and moving to the MPI for Microstructure Physics as a Group Leader. He also is the Chief Scientist at Ketos, Inc, a water quality start-up company he co-runs in Silicon Valley. He has numerous publications in the field of topological materials and physics, most notably discovering the Titanic Magnetoresistive effect in WTe2 and starting the field of investigating large and non-saturating magnetoresistance in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. His group currently focuses on exploring and understanding technologically useful properties of topological materials.
