Norshariza Nordin

Norshariza Nordin is currently a Senior Lecturer and the head of Medical Genetics Unit, Department of Biomedical Science, and a member of Genetics & Regenerative Medicine Research Centre in the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, UPM. She received her BSc in Microbiology from California State University Sacramento, California, USA in 1995. Later, she continued her MSc in Medical Microbiology at the Universiti Malaya and was conferred the degree in 2002. In 2006, she obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Genes and Development) specializing in animal stem cell research from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Her main research employs mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells as well as amniotic fluid stem (AFS) cells in exploring stem cell differentiation potential and as the models to understand neural development. Her research also focuses on the basic mechanisms involving differentiation processes of stem cells, specifically to unravel the roles of Wnt signalling molecule during neural differentiation process using a transgenic approach. She is also interested in unraveling neuroprotective, neuroregenerative and neuro-enhancement properties of natural products using stem cell-derived neurons as model for neurodegenerative diseases. Based on these interests, she has formed and led Stem Cell and Neural Development (SCND) group. She has published more than 60 articles in non- and index-cited journals, and presented more than 70 proceedings in poster and oral presentations. She also has co-authored one book, and authored and co-authored five book-chapters.
