Sigmund Hågvar

Sigmund Hågvar is a Professor Emeritus at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. He was born in 1944 and is an entomologist educated at the University of Oslo. 1969-72 he worked with high altitude entomology in the International Biological Programme (IBP). 1972-75 he worked in the Ministry of Environment, from 1975-1990 at the Norwegian Forest Research Institute, and from 1990 as a professor in nature conservation at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. He has worked with different insect groups such as Heteroptera, Coleoptera, Apoidea, and Formicidae. In Norway, he took an early initiative for conservation measures for insects. He has been engaged in conservation work for virgin forests and edited two books on that topic. In another book, the gradual loss of Norwegian nature was documented. He has participated actively in official debates around nature conservation.
