Gabriel Staicu

Bucharest University of Economic Studies Romania

Dr. Gabriel Ilie Staicu is an associate professor currently teaching Economics and Institutional Economics at Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Romania. His research on growth and development economics, institutional economics, and economic education has resulted in more than 30 publications in scientific journals and international conference volumes. The research findings included in his PhD thesis can be found in the book Education and Economic Growth: An Institutional Approach, which analyzes the educational system in Romania and the need of reform in education. His ideas, close to the values of classical liberalism, can also be found in the pages of the book Capitalism: The Logic of Liberty published by renowned Humanitas Publishing House. This book benefited from moral support and review of some respected intellectuals from international academic world, such as Harvard professor Janos Kornai, New Orleans Loyola University professor Walter Block, Paris-Dauphine University Pascal Salin, and Warsaw School of Economics professor Leszek Balcerowicz. Dr. Gabriel Staicu has recently started collaboration with InTech firstly because they share the same beliefs and social values: open science, open minds. He is a coauthor of the chapter “A Study of the Relationship between Foreign Aid and Human Development” in Africa that has been published in the InTech book International Development (2017) edited by Dr. Seth Appiah-Opoku.

What is poverty and how do we measure it? What is the link between inequality and poverty? What can governments do to alleviate poverty and inequality? Does economic growth reduce poverty in the long run? These are some important research questions that are addressed in this book. It brings together important researchers and university professors to offer some analytical insights into the field of poverty, inequality, and public policies. Using quantitative and qualitative research methods, the authors examine issues relating to (a) contextual, academic, and cognitive differences between rural and urban poverty; (b) the impact of inequality on poverty; (c) theoretical considerations and empirical findings about poverty and inequality with a special reference to Croatia and Pakistan; (d) the role of trade facilitation in reducing poverty in South Asia; and (e) the impact of trade liberalization on economic growth and poverty implications with a special reference to Sri Lanka. The reader of this book will find it concise, with a clearly defined research methodology and findings, and easy to understand. Benefiting of recent statistical data and practical experience from various countries around the world, the findings and conclusions might be helpful to academia and policy makers to find better answers to poverty and inequality in the future.

A Study of the Relationship between Foreign Aid and Human Development in Africa

Why are some countries more prosperous than others? Why are some countries still poor? What can be done by the West to help the rest to overcome the poverty trap? Finding better answers to these questions still represents the research agenda for development economists and political agenda for government and international institutions. Of course, the first two questions are age‐old ones and have been asked since the beginning of our history. The economic literature has identified important factors that influence the wealth of nations and they include: openness to trade, natural resources, capital accumulation, and innovation. Recent studies have found that cultural aspects and institutional framework tend to play a major role in a nation's development process. The researchers’ work also helps policy makers to find a better answer to the last question. The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate the effectiveness of aid in eradicating poverty and improving life conditions in African countries since 1980. Since we are at the beginning of a new UN development agenda, it is important for all stakeholders (recipient, donors, international agencies, etc.) to identify the conditions that enable aid to work.
