Tiago M. Fernández-Caramés (S\'08-M\'12-SM\'15) works as an associate professor at the University of A Coruña (UDC), Spain, where he obtained his MSc degree and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science. He has worked in the Department of Computer Engineering at UDC: from 2005 to 2009 through different predoctoral scholarships and, in parallel, since 2007, as a professor. His current research interests include blockchain, internet of things (IoT) and industrial IoT (IIoT) systems, wireless sensor networks, and augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR), as well as the different technologies involved in Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 paradigms. In such fields, he has contributed to more than a hundred papers for conferences and high-impact journals and books and has six patents.

Blockchain (BC) and artificial intelligence (AI) are currently two of the hottest computer science topics and their future seems bright. However, their convergence is not straightforward, and more research is needed in both fields. Thus, this book presents some of the latest advances in the convergence of BC and AI, gives useful guidelines for future researchers on how BC can help AI and how AI can become smarter, thanks to the use of BC. This book specifically analyzes the past of BC through the history of Bitcoin and then looks into the future: from massive internet-of-things (IoT) deployments, to the so-called metaverse, and to the next generation of AI-powered BC-based cyber secured applications.

A Methodology for Evaluating Security in Commercial RFID Systems

Although RFID has become a widespread technology, the developers of numerous commercial systems have not taken care of security properly. This chapter presents a methodology for detecting common security flaws. The methodology is put in practice using an open-source RFID platform (Proxmark 3), and it is tested in different fields, such as public transportation or animal identification. The results obtained show that the consistent application of the methodology allows researchers to perform security audits easily and detect, mitigate, or avoid risks and possible attacks.

Leveraging Blockchain for Sustainability and Open Innovation: A Cyber-Resilient Approach toward EU Green Deal and UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) member states identified 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be fulfilled by 2030. SDGs are an urgent global call for action to provide a blueprint for shared prosperity in a sustainable world. At a European level, in December 2019, the European Green Deal was presented, a roadmap to implement the UN 2030 agenda with a commitment to a growth strategy that will turn environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas. To achieve these SDGs, blockchain is one of the key enabling technologies that can help to create sustainable and secure solutions, since it is able to deliver accountability, transparency, traceability, and cyber-resilience, as well as to provide a higher operational efficiency in global partnerships. This chapter overviews the potential of blockchain to face sustainability challenges by describing several relevant applications. Finally, different open challenges and recommendations are enumerated with the aim of guiding all the stakeholders committed to the development of cyber-resilient and high-impact sustainable solutions.
