Dr. Sadashiv S. O. is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Life Sciences, Garden City University, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. He has obtained his Masters and Ph D. in Microbiology from Karnatak University, Dharwad. He has published 19 research articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals, 2 books, 5 book chapters and has edited 3 books. He has successfully guided various projects for Masters and Ph.D. students. He has secured two Young Scientists Award, one Gold Medal award and an Appreciation Award from the Zoological Society of India, for contribution in the field of microbiology. He has also worked in various academic responsibilities such as Editor in Chief, Advisory Editorial Member for various journals, BOS, BOE and a Coordinator for UG/PG examinations. His main areas of research are molecular biology, animal biotechnology and medical microbiology.

Since the beginning of civilization, humans and animals have developed very strong associations to their mutual benefits. Livestock, particularly bovines, are important contributors to total food production in the world. The social expectations in Science and Technology are increasing because of rapid advances. Prevention and control of infectious diseases in bovines have been among the top-most public health objective in the last decade. In the present book, experts from different continents present important aspects of bovine science such as louse infestations of ruminants, cytogenetics of bovines, factors of competitiveness for bovines, feed manipulation, enhancement of conjugated linoleic acid and its bioavailability, emergence of antimicrobial resistance, and also meat quality. The aim of this book to provide an understanding of the present scenario, advances and challenges in bovine science.

Resistance in Bacteria

Resistance is the result of bacteria evolving new genes in response to the presence of pesticide and antibiotics. In our society day by day, a number of chemicals, pesticides, and antibiotics are introducing due to the result of resistance development of bacteria. Pesticides are added to the environment for the purpose of killing or injuring some form of life. Pesticide resistance describes the decreased susceptibility of a pest population to a pesticide that was previously effective at controlling the pest. Bacteria have been used extensively for bioremediation purposes. The ability of organisms to bioremediate pesticides is mainly based on their biodegradation activity. Methomyl and imidacloprid are widely using throughout the world as a pesticide. Many pesticide degradation genes present in soil bacteria have been shown to reside on plasmids or genome, a common location for other degradation genes. The excessive use of pesticides and antibiotic leads and promotes the development of resistance in the bacteria. An increase in the frequency of antibiotic resistance in bacteria since the 1950s has been observed for all major classes of antibiotics used to treat a wide variety of diseases. Development of resistance is a major concern for another reason of human and animal health. Antibiotic resistance profiles of the isolates must be done earlier to the use of antibiotics in both to choose appropriate antibiotic for treatment and prevention of the disease. Research into newer antibiotics continues, measures can and should be taken to reverse the practices that promote the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
