Vincenzo Maria Sglavo

Vincenzo M. Sglavo is Associated Professor of Materials Science and Technology at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Trento, Italy. After graduating in Materials Engineering at the same University in 1988, he worked as post-doc in 1993-‘94 at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, USA. Then, he joined the Department of Materials Engineering (University of Trento) as Assistant Professor until 2000. In 2001 he was Adjunct Professor at the Materials Research Institute (The Pennsylvania State University, USA). Advisor of more than 80 Master thesis and of 28 PhD students, he has been managing more than 30 research projects. He is author of more than 150 scientific papers and 12 patents. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Ceramic Society.

In this book, some recent advances in glass science and technology are collected. In the first part, the structure and crystallization of innovative glass compositions are analysed. In the second part, innovative applications are described from the use of glass in optical devices and lasers to fibres in composites, micropatterned components in sensors and microdevices, beads in building walls and sealing in solid oxide fuel cells.
