Kimito Funatsu

Prof. Kimito Funatsu was born on December 3, 1955, in Japan. He received his Doctor degree (Dr. Sci.; physical organic chemistry) from Kyushu University which is one of the oldest imperial universities (1983) and joined Prof. Shin-ichi Sasaki’s group, Toyohashi University of Technology (1984) as research associate. During his research in Prof. Sasaki’s group, he worked on chemoinformatics field, i.e., Structure elucidation system CHEMICS, organic synthesis design system AIPHOS, molecular design. In 1990 he took the post of associate professor. In 2004 he moved to The University of Tokyo as full Professor to continue the same research work. Recently he is trying material design and soft senssensors is a chair of Division of chemical information and computer sciences, Chemthe ical Society of Japan.

The progress of data mining technology and large public popularity establish a need for a comprehensive text on the subject. The series of books entitled by 'Data Mining' address the need by presenting in-depth description of novel mining algorithms and many useful applications. In addition to understanding each section deeply, the two books present useful hints and strategies to solving problems in the following chapters. The contributing authors have highlighted many future research directions that will foster multi-disciplinary collaborations and hence will lead to significant development in the field of data mining.
