Eldon Shaffer

Eldon Shaffer is a Gastroenterologist who has held leadership positions in academic Medicine. At a university level, Dr. Shaffer was founding Division Head (Gastroenterology); founding chair, Gastrointestinal Research Group; Associate Dean (Clinical Affairs); Department Head (Internal Medicine), and Regional Clinical Department Head (Internal Medicine), all in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. At a national level, he was the first and founding President of Canadian Association for Study of the Liver; President, Canadian Association of Gastroenterology; President, Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation; Chair of the Medical Advisory Board, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation; President, Canadian Professors of Medicine; and Chair, Finance Committee of the Alberta Society of Gastroenterology. At an international level, he served on committees for the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Association for the Study of the Liver Disease and the American Gastroenterological Association, chairing the Liver Biliary section for the American Gastroenterological Association and sitting on the AGA Council and the Organizing Committee (Chair, Public Relations Committee) for the World Congress of Gastroenterology (Montreal 2005). His personal research activity has yielded over 500 papers, abstracts and edited texts. A recognized educator, Dr. Shaffer has received awards nationally from the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and regionally in Alberta and from his Faculty of Medicine. He currently is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, University of Calgary, where he enjoys an active consulting practice in Gastroenterology and continues to maintain his education and research interests that span from hepatobiliary diseases though functional gut disease and eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease.
