Dr. Saiful Bari obtained his Masters in “Renewable Energy” in 1989 and later completed his PhD in “Alternative Fuels in Diesel Engine” in 1991 from the Reading University, UK. He has over 25 years of experience in teaching and research in the area of Internal Combustion Engines, their fuels and emissions. Dr. Bari is currently working on two major projects (1) Near zero particle emissions from diesel engines through ionized particles and combination of electro-static-charged and conventional filters” and (2) “Development of waste energy recovery technology”. Dr. Bari has published over 100 papers in various International Journals and Conferences. He has also supervised over 20 postgraduate students and completed over $2 million projects. Dr. Bari is currently the Program Director of the School of Engineering at the University of South Australia. He is the member of professional association of Engineers Australia, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Dr. Bari is the reviewer of over 16 International Journals and has organized numerous International Conferences.

Diesel engines, also known as CI engines, possess a wide field of applications as energy converters because of their higher efficiency. However, diesel engines are a major source of NOX and particulate matter (PM) emissions. Because of its importance, five chapters in this book have been devoted to the formulation and control of these pollutants. The world is currently experiencing an oil crisis. Gaseous fuels like natural gas, pure hydrogen gas, biomass-based and coke-based syngas can be considered as alternative fuels for diesel engines. Their combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics are described in this book. Reliable early detection of malfunction and failure of any parts in diesel engines can save the engine from failing completely and save high repair cost. Tools are discussed in this book to detect common failure modes of diesel engine that can detect early signs of failure.
