Giovanni Berselli

Giovanni Berselli is Associate Professor in Design Methods and Tools for Industrial Engineering (SSD ING-IND/15) at the University of Genoa, where he teaches the courses of Technical Drawing, Computer Aided Design, and Design of Automatic Machines for the 1st and 2nd level Degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Nautical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. He received the Laurea degree (magna cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Bologna in 2004 and 2009, respectively. He was previously Research Associate with the Escuela Superior de Ingenieros de la Universidad de Navarra, San Sebastian, Spain (2006), and with Monash University, Melbourne, Australia (2003-2004). He has been Visiting Professor at the Robotics and Automation Lab and Precision Engineering Groups, University of Twente, The Netherlands (2017, 4 months) and at the Medical Devices and Simulation Lab - Harvard Medical School (short visit, 2016).

The objective of the present book, which tries to summarize in an edited format and in a fairly comprehensive manner, many of the recent technical research accomplishments in the area of Smart Actuators and Smart Sensors, is to combine researchers and scientists from different fields into a single virtual room. The book hence reflects the multicultural nature of the field and will allow the reader to taste and appreciate different points of view, different engineering methods and different tools that must be jointly considered when designing and realizing smart actuation and sensing systems.
