Miran Čas

Miran Cas was born 22. 7. 1952 in Slovenj Gradec. He lived in village Salek near the Velenje city. The primary and high school he visited in Velenje. In year 1971 he has entered to University of Ljubljana, the Biotechical Faculty, Dep. of Forestry. In 1976 he has got student award “Presernova nagrada” for research work “Imigration of deciduous trees in to spruce monoculture forests on Mislinja Pohorje” and later graduated from the similar thesis “Legality and the importance of the return of deciduous trees in spruce monocultures Mislinja Pohorje” under the supervision of prof. dr. dr. Dusan Mlinsek. In his student years he coached athletics and was a Slovenian marathon champion. After one year military service, mainly as a sportsman. He was employed in 1980 on Forest Management Unit Slovenj Gradec, after the professional examination he worked as a clerk for the cultivation and protection of mountain forests with some areas of air pollution forests. In 1985 he joined the Slovenia Forestry Institute (SFI), at the invitation, which was included in further studies master's degree as a young researcher. His work is the first study related to the sustainable management and protection of forests ecosystems affected by air pollution, changing cultural landscape and the development of alpine forests. After 1990 he began to participate in studies of forest ecology, fauna and wildlife, biodiversity and sustainable management of forest ecosystems. He focused in active conservation to habitats of endangered species including recommendations for the coordinated forest and hunting management. Emphasis of his research work was in wildlife ecology and impacts of land-use change and climate change on forest habitats, especially on the spatial and genetic endangerment of capercaillie in Slovenia and in South-eastern Europe. In 1996 he received his MA and Ph.D. in 2006 (Fluctuation of capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.) population in relation to past land use and forest structures in the south-east Alps), under supervision of prof. dr. Miha Adamic. He has over 200 references and is the leader in the research field of forest Fauna ecology and hunting on SFI. He an active member of the hunting and fishing federations of Slovenia and the Society for the observation and study of birds, and a member of IUCN-SSC Grouse Specialist-Groupe. He was member of Slovenian commission for forming the European network of special protected areas Natura 2000. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Slovenian Hunting Association. He live in Kamnik city near the Ljubljana.
