Professor Gabriel Kabanda is an academician, a seasoned information and communication technology consultant, and a strategist with wide-ranging experience spanning over 23 years. He is a Professor of Management Information Systems (MIS)/Computer Science and was conferred and appointed a Fellow of the Zimbabwe Academy of Sciences in October 2009. He acquired considerable experience in providing information technology and strategic management consultancy services to various corporates in Zimbabwe, SADC, East and West Africa, the United Nations and Microsoft International. Prof Kabanda has written various technical papers and books, and presented and facilitated at several international conferences, workshops, seminars, and study schools. Gabriel holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science (California, USA), Master of Science in Computer Science (Wales), a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics (University of Zimbabwe), Gold Diploma in Computer Programming (London) an a Diploma in Applied Meteorology (Reading). He was awarded the world-wide honour of Who’s Who of Professionals in 1997 in recognition of his outstanding academic and professional achievements. Gabriel is one of the 8 members of the Technical Committee on Collaboration (TCC) of the African Council for Distance Education (ACDE) since April 2009, a continental unifying body with a membership that covers over 36 paid up universities/Higher Education institutions in the African Union. Prof Kabanda is an External Examiner of one South African university and one Zimbabwean university. Gabriel is the Pro Vice Chancellor (PVC) at the Zimbabwe Open University since January, 2008. He was responsible for Strategic Planning, Academic Affairs, Learner Support, Marketing, and Income Generation from January, 2008 up to December, 2010. He is now the PVC responsible for Corporate Planning and Business Development since January, 2011. Prof Kabanda has extensive university lectureship experience mainly at postgraduate level at the University of Zimbabwe, University of Derby (UK), National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe Open University, Women’s University in Africa and University of South Africa. His previous positions include Director of Information and Communication Technology at Zimbabwe Open University and held other senior management positions in industry and commerce such as Chief Operating Officer/ Executive Director in a regional telecommunications company, an Assistant General Manager in a bank, a Principal Consultant in an international consultancy and accounting/auditing firm, an Assistant Director in the Government of Zimbabwe and a Meteorologist/ Data Processing Manager.
