Noam R. Shabtai received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), Beer-Sheva, Israel, in 2002, 2005 and 2011, respectively. Awarded the Kreitman Post-Doctoral Scholarship, from 2011 to 2013 he was working as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Acoustics Lab (ACL) in BGU. After winning the Minerva Post-Doctoral Fellowship, he was hosted from 2013 until 2015 in the Institute of Technical Acoustics (ITA), Rheinisch-Westf ̈alische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen University). During that time he won the European Acoustic Association (EAA) best paper award for young researchers. In 2015 he returned to BGU, and since then he works as a as a researcher in the ACL as well as in the Biomedical Signal Processing Research Lab. His most recent research interests include spatial hearing, binaural sound reproduction, microphone array signal processing, and the modeling and auralization of acoustic radiation from naturalsources.

In the last decade, further applications of speech processing were developed, such as speaker recognition, human-machine interaction, non-English speech recognition, and non-native English speech recognition. This book addresses a few of these applications. Furthermore, major challenges that were typically ignored in previous speech recognition research, such as noise and reverberation, appear repeatedly in recent papers. I would like to sincerely thank the contributing authors, for their effort to bring their insights and perspectives on current open questions in speech recognition research.
