Raphael Segun Bello

Bello, RS is a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural & Bioenvironmental Engineering Technology, Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu with over 20 years of professional and community service experience. He obtained an MSc and Ph.D. in Wood Products Engineering from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His research interests and activities are in Wood product utilization, bio-waste resources management, and machinery development. Bello has published over 75 articles in international journals, conferences, and 30 standard textbooks in agricultural mechanization and wood processing. He is a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Two essential components of solar energy which are derivable from the sun-radiant light (passive solar power) and heat (active solar powers) have been harnessed for decades using a range of continuously-evolving and cutting-edge technologies. Such technologies include solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and photo emitters. Recently, there has been active research in solar energy resources due to improvements in solar panel geometry, photo-cell materials, glazing and panel orientation. Equally, more rigorous methods of modeling inter-reflections within curvilinear surfaces are now being evaluated for simplified analytical evaluations. Therefore, this book, Solar Radiation Applications, presents the outcomes of selective and classic works on the optimization of these essential fields in active solar energy research.

Modeling Growth and Yield of Crops Using Different Tillage Systems

Tillage, an integral component of crop production systems, affects crops growth and yield. Different experiments conducted by researchers on diverse tillage systems, and proposal of different models for predicting crops output were presented. Estimating plant yield has positive value for sustainable development. The number of factors determining crop productivity makes modeling crop production challenging task. Forecasting crop production is challenging, requiring making inferences on future performance based on past conditions. Farmers focus on yield as cropping commences. Formerly, yield prediction was calculated by analyzing farmer\'s previous experience on particular crop. Finite model equations are used to predict output of crops during cultivation provided soil physical properties and their growth parameters are revealed. Different tillage systems including conventional, conservative, reduced, zero, mulch, ridge, minimum and strip in predicting crops growth and yield were discussed. Notable models for predicting growth and yield of crops using different tillage systems were highlighted. Yield of crops is estimated during cultivation provided soil physical properties, climate conditions, and growth parameters of crops are known. Modern farming, utilizing model equations for estimating output, using soil physical properties, climate conditions and relevant parameters of tillage systems are recommended for improvement in crop production depending on soil types.
