IntechOpen Taking Action Towards the Global Goals – an Overview

24 August 2022

As a signatory of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Publishers Compact, IntechOpen works proudly to accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs by 2030. Since the beginning of 2022, we have published books and launched journals to inform, develop and inspire sustainable practices with the goals in focus.

In August 2022, IntechOpen is appointing Viktorija Žgela, our Head of Editorial Development, to lead commitment to the SDG Publishers Compact and the editorial development aspect of SDG themes throughout the organization.

At the end of last year, IntechOpen joined the United Nations SDG Publishers Compact, which is designed in collaboration with the International Publishers Association to accelerate progress to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the end of the decade.

The 17 SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

As a signatory, IntechOpen is committed to playing a key role in its network and community by publishing books and journals that will help inform, develop, and inspire sustainable practices toward achieving these goals.

In line with its values, IntechOpen launched a new Open Access Book Series on Sustainable Development in July. Led by Series Editor Prof. Usha Iyer-Raniga from RMIT University, Australia, and an international Editorial Board, the Series presents a topical structure that groups the 17 SDGs:

  • Sustainable Economy and Fair Society
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Inclusivity and Social Equity
  • Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability
  • Urban Planning and Environmental Management

As part of our continuous Edited Volumes publishing program, since January, we have published 35+ books that aim at increasing awareness and promoting scientific research in support of the global United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with more than 130 upcoming titles.

Furthermore, our recently launched Open Science Journal, Green Energy and Environmental Technology, has published its first papers. The journal publishes work across biological and environmental sciences, showcasing research within these rapidly developing fields with a high impact on humankind and its environment. Articles published aim to support United Nations SDGs and have a strong technological component.

Viktorija Žgela, who leads IntechOpen’s commitment to the SDG Publishers Compact says: “With the SDGs’ 2030 target in mind, we are excited to share our achievements and actions in the past six months to further the initiative's objectives. We are committed to using our publishing platform as a unique tool by providing researchers with the best environment for their work.

“Our aim is to contribute to the initiative through our entire publishing program, by actively promoting, acquiring, and publishing content that advocates for themes represented by the SDGs. We face complex challenges in the 21st century and decision-makers and the general public need access to an open evidence base in order that we can all work towards a more sustainable way of life.”
