IntechOpen Journals Announce Partnership with Figshare to Promote Open Data

31 May 2023

We are delighted to announce our partnership with Figshare and the integration between IntechOpen Journals data and Figshare’s repository infrastructure. IntechOpen embraces opportunities to collaborate with partners that share our values. Open data, and transparency in research are core to Open Science.

In line with the Open Science principles, IntechOpen Journals supports research transparency, including openly sharing code and data in published manuscripts. Authors are encouraged to include all available data supporting their research findings and their replication, including using an appropriate repository. The partnership with Figshare forwards this goal through improved archiving and access to open data sets and other supporting information.

This initiative improves the experience of IntechOpen Journal’s authors and researchers, enhancing submission processes, citation tracking, discoverability, sharing and reuse of research outputs. It helps authors meet requirements from their institutions and funders, for open and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data.

Data is uploaded through the IntechOpen journals manuscript submission system,  ReView, developed and hosted by River Valley Technology. Authors can upload a wider range of research outputs and the data is automatically transferred to Figshare. An integrated widget displays spreadsheets, images, graphs, videos and other data types directly in the article and they are also viewable on the IntechOpen portal hosted by Figshare. Research outputs are citable and a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) allows researchers to see views, downloads, citations and Altmetric information for their research outputs.

Recently, IntechOpen welcomed Mark Hahnel, Figshare founder and CEO, as a keynote speaker for the first in the ‘Engaging with Open Science’ series of webinars. Mark will be joining the IntechOpen Journals team to promote the benefits of open data, and to raise awareness of the Figshare partnership at The International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA). He will be speaking at the IntechOpen ICRA networking event at their Open Science Caffe, alongside  Kaveh Bazargan of River Valley Technologies.

We are delighted to partner with the IntechOpen Journal team, allowing authors and readers across their portfolio to benefit from an enhanced experience,” says Mark Hahnel, Figshare Founder and CEO. “I look forward to joining with IntechOpen at ICRA 2023 later this month to promote the benefits of open data.”

Kaveh said "We are thrilled to be working with IntechOpen and Figshare to promote open data and to support researchers. We have always supported openness in publishing, in order to allow painless information exchange, both for narrative text and for data. We developed our submission and peer review  platform, ReView, specifically with the intention for easy linking with external data repositories such as Figshare."

Natalia Reinic Babic, Head of Journal Publishing and Open Science, IntechOpen, said, "Open data initiatives are revolutionising research, accelerating progress and making findings more robust. Our partnership with Figshare allows more authors to easily engage with Open Science, making their research more discoverable and allowing others to build on it, furthering the creation of knowledge."
