Fortunately, the mortality of CRC is considered to be most avertable; hence, it is essential to develop new approaches for more accurate and early diagnosis of primary as well as metastatic CRC, including genetic and biomarker tests. In this regard, the intercellular junctions and the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis attract increasing attention, since they are involved in several stages of cancer and for their vital role in regulating cell survival and growth; furthermore, constituents of intercellular junctions and of the IGF axis could be used as tumor and/or metastasis markers, which are becoming the focus of increasing research activities. Our experimental results highlight the importance of gene expression changes in the tight junction proteins claudins, and in the IGF-binding proteins IGFBP3 and IGFBP7. They show additionally that claudins and IGFBPs cannot be simply defined in terms of favoring or antagonizing cancer progression but have additional properties and activities, which become apparent only in the context of liver colonization. Here, we delineate the relationship between CRC-associated epigenetic marks, their modifying enzymes, and the classification of CRC into distinct molecular pathways or subtypes. Moreover, we discuss some of the most prominent methyltransferases, demethylases, acetyltransferases, and deacetylases, which have been targeted for preclinical and clinical CRC treatment. Notably, inhibitors against these epigenetic enzymes are a promising new class of anticancer drugs, with several obtaining Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the treatment of blood and solid tumors. \r\n\tThis book concerns autonomous mobile mapping robots capable of digitizing the surrounding environment in the form of a map easily interpretable by humans. This functionality is related to fundamental algorithmic challenges in the mobile robotic domain.
\r\n\r\n\tSuch machines can execute the autonomous mission in unknown and harsh environments; thus, they can help humans in decreasing the time of digital map delivery. Many algorithmic challenges have to be addressed, such as Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping assuming low energy onboard computers. LiDAR and VISUAL odometry are t candidates for initial trajectory estimation. Furthermore, a robust Graph SLAM approach can efficiently reduce incremental odometry error. Moreover, recent advances in Deep Neural Networks DNN applied for image and LiDAR data processing and analysis (segmentation and classification) are also crucial. DNN can provide necessary information to improve autonomous task execution. This book will address the problem of path planning and autonomous task execution as large-scale mobile mapping applications. For this reason, some practical implementations are provided. This book will intend to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art in autonomous mobile mapping robots.

Many factors, i.e., cultivars, carbon sources, phytohormones, and osmotic stress, affect the cell totipotency (Figure 1). So far, the regeneration cultures have been successfully established in many plant species including rice, but molecular mechanisms behind this scene are still lots of mist [2, 3, 4]. In rice, pluripotent calli were usually induced from seeds or immature embryos cultured on MS medium containing 2,4-D. These calli derived from various cultivars can be classified into two different cell types, nonregenerable callus (NRC) and highly regenerable callus (HRC). After transferred to regeneration medium, HRC can rapidly process shoot organogenesis, but NRC will still retain callus amplification or adventitious root formation [5]. There have been many protocols developed to optimize the induction frequency of NRC, but the shoot regeneration ability still varies among cultivars [6, 7, 8].
Factors affecting shoot regeneration in rice.
Previous studies had identified that added osmotic agents like sorbitol or mannitol in callus induction medium can stimulate HRC formation instead of NRC, thus promoting the shoot formation frequency [5, 7, 9, 10, 11]. It is still unclear why appropriate osmotic stress during callus induction can promote shoot organogenesis frequency, but there were lots of studies indicating that osmotic stress can stimulate endogenous phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation which is also proven to have the function of promoting somatic embryogenesis and shoot organogenesis when it used as an exogenous plant growth regulator in callus culture [11, 12, 13, 14, 15]. ABA is widely recognized as a negative plant hormone which mainly functions on stress responses and seed dormancy, but when it is treated in low concentration, ABA could become a positive regulator on root elongation [16]. Although the molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon are not yet clarified, apparently, ABA has its role in the developmental process.
Other phytohormones, auxin and cytokinin, are also reported to play critical roles in embryogenic callus induction and shoot development [8, 17, 18]. In plants, auxin is considered as a positive growth regulator, which contributes to cell differentiation [19]. High levels of auxin are usually found in shoot and root apical meristems where plants organize their developmental patterns, and so does in HRC [20, 21]. Many studies mentioned that adding different levels of exogenous auxin during callus culture may cause different organogenesis, like low levels of auxin may induce root organ formation while high levels of 2,4-D sustain callus induction [22, 23, 24]. Cross talk among auxin and ABA mostly focused on root development or abiotic stress responses [25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30]. Our previous studies had identified that both endogenous auxin and ABA levels were higher in HRC than in NRC and then quickly decreased after transferred to regeneration medium [5, 8]. The interaction and signaling pathway between these two phytohormones to shoot organogenesis are further discussed.
Undoubtedly, shoot regeneration is a very complicated process, which is modulated by networks among phytohormones and their downstream metabolic changes in plant cells [31, 32]. In our previous studies, we reported that HRC contained higher levels of glucose, sucrose, and starch, accomplished with higher mRNA transcription levels of cell-wall bound-invertase 1 (CIN1) and SUTs genes [8, 33]. Also, we found that these changes on carbohydrate metabolisms can also be found in osmotic and ABA treated calli, suggesting the possibility of regulation mechanisms on HRC formation [5, 11].
Combined with our findings and previous studies, we proposed a hypothesis for HRC induction in rice callus culture. Osmotic stress may initiate a signal to regulate endogenous auxin to interact with ABA and then stimulate soluble sugars accumulate in callus to trigger embryonic callus formation for shoot regeneration [11].
Phytohormones are considered one of the major important factors that control cell fate in callus cultures. Different types and concentrations of auxin treatment may induce different tissue differentiations. Besides, ABA is also considered to play roles in somatic embryogenesis and shoot organogenesis. In this section, we will discuss the functions of auxin and ABA in regenerable callus induction.
Auxin is known to play a major role in cell elongation, growth tropisms, and cell fate determination [34]. The main endogenous auxin compound is indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), which could be synthesized via a tryptophan-dependent or -independent pathway [35]. After being synthesized in apical meristems, auxin will be transported to the other tissues through its transporter, PIN-formed proteins (PIN), and AUXIN1/LIKE-AUX1 (AUX/LAX) proteins to deliver the hormonal signal for downstream auxin responses [17, 36]. The distribution of auxin in plants is polarity which means that it is not equally expressed in the whole plant but specifically concentrated in some tissues or limited to cells [36]. Due to this property, scientists are able to monitor the patterns of auxin gradient during plant development [37]. Form the literature, the positions of maximum auxin accumulation were the place processing organ initiation. Therefore, auxin is usually found to have maximum levels in apical meristems or in the developing tissues [38]. During embryogenesis, the expression pattern of PINs dynamically changes within the developmental stages. For example, PIN1 is expressed without polarity until 16-cell stage, but later in 32-cell stage, it will express specifically in the basal part of provascular cells to direct auxin flow to hypophysis. After dividing into transition and early heart embryo stages, the expression of PIN1 will shift to the flank of the apical part, thus accumulating auxin in the edge of apical domain to shape the embryo [39, 40]. Similar developmental patterns can be found during shoot apical meristem (SAM) establishment, where auxin is highly concentrated in leaf primordia and the central region of SAM [18, 41].
In callus, the signal of auxin is mainly located in the central region near callus induction medium. Later, the signal will shift to the surface layer and start SAM establishment for shoot differentiation after transfer into regeneration medium [42]. However, this organogenesis process is blocked when the activity of auxin transporters is inhibited, and so does in auxin sensor
ABA is usually considered to play negative roles in plant growth [26, 46]. Except the function of seed dormancy regulation and stress responses, ABA is also reported to have function on root and shoot development [46, 47]. Although there were some genes participating in ABA signaling, which were also reported to involve in the shoot regeneration process, there is still no clarity about the molecular function of endogenous ABA on the shoot organogenesis process [14, 15]. However, some studies, including our previous works, found that ABA was highly accumulated in HRC, but not in NRC [5]. Furthermore, the expression profiles of ABA biosynthesis genes were also upregulated, which match with our results [48].
On the other hand, ABA is reported to stimulate dehydration responses during embryo maturation stages [49]. From the publications, we observed that HRC has less water content and smaller callus size, which is similar to the dehydration phenotype. Thus, it is possible that ABA shared similar regulation mechanisms with embryo maturation during shoot regeneration. Despite the loss of water in HRC, it also showed higher content of soluble sugars [8, 11]. It is already known that high content of sugar may enhance osmotic stress and then stimulate endogenous ABA biosynthesis to ABA responses [33], but the underlying mechanisms to shoot differentiation is still unclarified.
In cells, osmotic stress could originate from water-deficiency or high salt which caused an imbalance between plastids and apoplast [50]. To achieve tolerant to osmotic stress condition, cells will modulate the content’s osmotic adjustments like sugars, potassium ions, or proline to balance its osmotic pressure to environments to avoid collapse. Phytohormone ABA is reported to accumulate under osmotic stress to modulate anion channel
Not only ABA, auxin is also regulated by osmotic stress. In rice, the endogenous levels of auxin are reported to be suppressed under osmotic stress [50, 51]. However, a closer look at the expression levels of different auxin biosynthesis-related genes and the distributions of auxin showed various patterns in the whole plants in different stages, some of them even inconsistent with the overall patterns, suggesting that auxin may function differently among tissues under osmotic stress. As for the patterns of
Exogenous carbohydrates are used either as energy sources or osmotic agents in tissue culture. So far, many articles have revealed that different carbon sources may lead to different callus induction abilities [7, 55, 56], but rarely discussed about the carbohydrate metabolisms and signaling pathways in callus cultures. Sucrose is widely used as a main carbon source as well as osmotic agent in rice tissue culture [57, 58]. During the tissue culture, sucrose will be taken up and hydrolyzed into glucose and fructose by CINs, or be transported into cells by SUTs for further application [59]. CINs were already reported to involve in early seeding establishments and grain fillings, and so do the SUTs [60, 61].
According to our studies, HRC induced by osmotic stress seemed to obtain higher contents of glucose, sucrose, and starch than NRC, which also reflected in the higher dry weights [33, 56, 62]. We analyzed the expression patterns of
Plants are known to accumulate starch granules specifically in the columella cells [63, 64]. Although the function of these starch granules is mostly reported in root gravity, they could also be markers to point out the stem cell niche, since these starch granules may disappear in the plants with stem cell defect [64]. Our studies also found the accumulation of starch granules in peripheral regions in HRC [62]. High concentration of sorbitol or mannitol will enlarge the distribution of starch granules. It may link to the increase of the shoot organogenesis area [5]. However, the physiological functions and mechanisms of starch accumulation still remained, requiring further studies.
Moreover, the accumulation and metabolism of soluble sugars and starch can be induced by AnA treatment (anthranilic acid and ABA supplemented into the medium together) to replace osmotic stress treatment. High levels of endogenous IAA and ABA at the same time are necessary during HRC induction. Both of them need to decreased suddenly in few days are also an important criteria for further shoot regeneration [5]. To link these metabolic changes with phytohormone regulations, we also introduced auxin transport inhibitor TIBA during callus induction and found that it will inhibit carbohydrate accumulation and result in low shoot regeneration frequency. However, ABA signals seemed to be promoted under TIBA treatment [8, 11]. It is still not clear whether exceeding ABA signals will turn into negative regulator on HRC induction, but these results still indicate that there must be interactions among auxin, ABA, and carbohydrate metabolisms on HRC formation.
Inducing regenerate tissues from pluripotent cells is a fascinating event. So far, botanists have already shown that they were able to get regeneration plants from callus in many plant species [49, 65, 66, 67]. However, why and how plants achieve this process is still unknown, especially in molecular levels. Here, we propose a hypothesis among phytohormone, osmotic stress, and carbohydrate metabolisms on HRC induction based on current knowledge and our findings (Figure 2). According to our model, levels of endogenous IAA upregulated by osmotic stress treatment can promote sugar uptake via CIN and SUT, which result in carbohydrate accumulation during callus induction stages. Similar to auxin, endogenous ABA level is also enhanced under osmotic stress, thus modulating starch accumulation during formation of HRC by downregulating α-amylase activity. Our studies indicated that exogenous auxin or ABA treatment alone is not sufficient for embryonic or organogenic callus formation, which only increased the plant regeneration rate for 35 and 5%, separately [5]. However, when we combine both ABA and anthranilic acid treatment together, the regeneration frequency can be promoted to 80% similar to osmotic stress treatment, suggesting that there must be some interaction between these two phytohormones. The roles of accumulated carbohydrates in HRC could be used as osmotic agents for further metabolism changes or be consumed as an energy source in later regeneration stages. In conclusion, the culture system of shoot regeneration in rice callus is a two-step process. Our studies suggested that induction of highly regenerable callus is more important than different kinds of treatment during the shoot regeneration stage. Besides, osmotic stress triggers a serial of change of endogenous hormone metabolism, sensing, and signal transduction, which leads to increase of sucrose uptake and starch accumulation and provides sufficient carbon source for further shoot regeneration.

Rock physics is often called a “velocity-porosity” science. The idea behind this name is to predict the elastic-wave velocities in porous rock from its porosity or implement an inverse operation and interpret the velocity measured in a well or using seismic tomography or reflection techniques for the porosity of rock. It is important to mention that the elastic-wave velocities are related to the elastic moduli of rock as follows:

Because of the link between the elastic-wave velocities and elastic moduli as given by Eq. (1), it is often instructive to relate these elastic moduli to porosity. Such approach opens an avenue to using the so-called effective medium theories where the elastic moduli are theoretically related to porosity and the geometry of rock, referring to the spatial arrangement of pores and grains, as well as shapes of these pores and grains.
It has been discovered early that the velocity and elastic moduli not only depend on porosity, but also on the properties of the mineral frame. A rule of thumb is that at the same porosity, the softer the mineral frame, the smaller the elastic moduli of rock. For example, at the same porosity, rocks containing soft clays have velocities smaller than rocks dominated by stiffer quartz. Hence, rock physics is not only a “velocity-porosity” science but also a “velocity-porosity-mineralogy” science.
The situation becomes more complex if we consider the effects of the pore fluid on the elastic moduli (and velocities) of a porous composite. It is intuitively clear that the less compressible the pore fluid (water versus gas), the stiffer the entire rock, meaning that its bulk modulus is higher. Now we are talking about “velocity-porosity-mineralogy-fluid.”
The science of rock physics also includes understanding and quantification of other rock properties, such as hydraulic permeability and electrical resistivity, and their relation to other attributes, namely, porosity, rock texture, and mineralogy.
Generally, contemporary rock physics treats natural rock as a holistic object whose various properties (attributes) are extracted from experiments simulating processes, such as elastic-wave propagation, fluid and electrical transport, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and breakage. We seek a theoretical understanding of interrelations between such attributes and their mathematical quantification. Such relations are also called rock physics models (RPM) or transforms. Needless to say that such quantification has to be “as simple as possible but not simpler.”
Finally, the newest branch of rock physics is digital rock physics (DRP) whose mandate is to “image and compute,” image rock at the pore scale and digitally simulate various processes within the digital image. For example, simulations of viscous fluid flow yield permeability, simulations of electrical charge transport yield resistivity, and simulations of deformation under stress yield the elastic moduli.
Let us now review some of historic developments in rock physics.
Arguably, the first rock physics velocity-porosity transform was introduced by Wyllie et al. [2]. It simply states that the total P-wave traveltime through rock with porosity

Laboratory experiments measuring the elastic-wave velocities in rock often show that the presence of the fluid in the pores strongly affects the elastic properties (Figure 4). Such dramatic results, especially for
Arguably, the most important contribution to rock physics is Gassmann’s fluid substitution theory [9]. This theory allows us to compute the bulk modulus of porous rock filled with Fluid A if this modulus is known (measured) in the same rock but filled with Fluid B. These derivations were conducted under the assumption that the wave-induced pore pressure oscillations equilibrate within the sample over the wave period, meaning that Gassmann’s is a low-frequency theory. Hence, it is applicable at the wireline and seismic frequency ranges. It helps predict the seismic response of rock filled with any hypothetical fluid if it is measured in situ where the pore fluid is known. For example, if the elastic properties of rock are measured in situ in rock 100% filled with water, we can predict these properties in the same rock but filled with oil or gas.

The Raymer et al. [3] model also predicts a strong dependence of the velocity on mineralogy (Figure 8), as well as the pore fluid, the latter well pronounced at higher porosity.
The velocity in carbonate rocks is often not as affected by stress as it is in clastic samples. The magnitude of this effect is often influenced by the presence of compliant cracks in the rock. Such cracks act to strongly affect the velocity at low pressure while they are open. As the pressure increases, these cracks close acting to increase the velocity (Figure 10, Sample A). In samples where the cracks are absent, the velocity hardly varies as a function of pressure (Figure 10, Sample B).

Notice that both historic velocity-porosity model by Wyllie et al. [2] and Raymer et al. [3] do not account for the dependence of the elastic-wave velocities on the confining stress. Both models are suitable for predicting the elastic properties at high, but not at low stress.
The velocity-stress dependence is important in understanding and predicting the seismic responses during hydrocarbon recovery, a process where the differential pressure may increase during production if the reservoir is depleted and the pore pressure is reduced, while the overburden remains constant. This differential pressure may decrease during enhanced oil recovery where water or gas are injected into the reservoir at high pressure, acting to reduce the difference between the overburden and pore pressure. Plots similar to that shown in Figure 5 (right-hand frame) are useful in simultaneously assessing the effects of the pore fluid and differential pressure on the elastic attributes.
There are two kinds of elastic moduli versus porosity effective medium models: (a) inclusion models and (b) grain-based models. The first kind models build a rock from the zero-porosity endpoint by placing inclusions into the solid matrix [1]. These models are perhaps relevant to some carbonate rocks where the pores appear as inclusions in calcite or dolomite matrix. The second kind assumes that the rock is formed by solid grains which comprise an uncemented grain pack at the high-porosity endpoint (also called the critical porosity) and, as the porosity is reduced, the original pack is altered either by grain contact cement or by smaller grains deposited in the pore space between the original larger grains, or a combination of these two processes.

Notice that DEM curves connect two endpoints, one at zero porosity where the elastic moduli of rock are those of the mineral matrix and the other at 100% porosity where the elastic moduli are those of the inclusions (fluid in the pores). About three decades ago, Nur observed that most natural rocks simply do not exist in the entire zero to 100% porosity range. The maximum geologically plausible porosity for clastic rocks (sands and sandstones) is about 0.40. It may be higher in carbonates, such as chalks, that can have porosity up to 0.50. This porosity can be even higher for foam-like formations, such as volcanic rock (pumice) or artificially manufactured glass foam. This maximum porosity is called the
One implication of the critical porosity concept is that the high-porosity endpoint should be at the critical porosity rather than at 100% porosity. Figure 16 shows an example of using the constant-cement model to describe the elastic behavior of unconventional gas shale, while Figure 17 is an example of applying the stiff-sand model to carbonate reservoirs. The parameters of the models are provided in the captions. These two examples show that the grain-based theories given here are appropriate not only for clastic sediments but also in very different lithological settings.

Figure 18 shows laboratory data obtained at 30 MPa confining pressure on dry high-porosity, almost pure-quartz sand samples from the North Sea. In this classic example, the higher-velocity dataset is contact-cemented turbidite sand, while the lower-velocity dataset is friable and virtually uncemented sand. The former data can be matched by the contact-cement curves transitioning into the stiff-sand trajectories. The latter data are matched by the soft-sand curves.
Digital rock physics is based on the concept “image and compute,” image rock at the pore scale (Figure 19) and then simulate in the computer various processes in such an image to arrive at a desired rock property. These simulations include viscous fluid flow to arrive at hydraulic permeability, electrical charge flow to arrive at electrical resistivity, as well as elastic deformation to arrive at the elastic moduli and velocities.

The advantage of such digital approach is that the same sample can be reused multiple times, unlike in physical experiments where a sample is altered after every test; the sample can be digitally altered by, e.g., introducing digenetic cementation, which is hardly possible in physical experiments, as well as subsampling of a digital volume to investigate how various rock properties vary within the volume and how relations between rock properties depend on the spatial scale of investigation.
Although the aforementioned concept is simple, its implementation is not. First, the imaging has to be conducted at the appropriate scale and resolution to reveal the salient features of natural rock relevant to the process under examination. Second, the image has to be segmented to separate minerals from pores and segregate various minerals within the solid matrix, as well as fluid phases inside the pores. Third, powerful computational engines have to be utilized and verified to simulate processes relevant to the physical experiment.
In spite of these complexities, during the last decade, DRP has emerged as a powerful technique complementing (if not replacing) physical testing, mostly due to the recent advances in imaging hardware and image processing and computational software, the latter combined with steadily improving computational power. Not only DRP has become a novel research tool in academia and national labs, but is has also been adopted by leading oil and service companies.
There is one more inherent feature of DRP that needs to be accounted for. Pore-scale rock images are only a few mm in size, and the higher the resolution needed to revel the salient features, the smaller the field of view. At the same time, these computational results have to be relevant at much larger spatial scales of feet for wireline measurement interpretations in the well or tens and hundreds of feet in seismic prospecting. Even such basic property as porosity may be different if measured on an inch-sized sample an on mm-sized fragment of the same sample.
One way out of this conundrum is instead of directly comparing data points generated by different methods of measurement, compare trends formed by such data points, such as permeability versus porosity trends. Dvorkin et al. [18] show that such trends are often hidden inside a very small digital sample and can be derived by subsampling it. Moreover, these computational trends often match relevant physical trends and/or theoretical rock physics transforms, hence validating computational results and making them relevant at much coarser spatial scales.
The approach is to subsample a digital volume into 23, 33, or 43 subvolumes (Figure 20) and then compute the desired property pairs (e.g., porosity and permeability) on each of these subvolumes. Very often, the property pairs thus computed form a meaningful trend supported by physical measurements and/or theories (see examples in Figures 21–23). We can call this subsampling approach “to see the rock in a grain of sand.”

These results open ways to a meaningful utilization of DRP in research and industry. Publications related to DRP are many and the number is growing. We refer the reader to Kameda and Dvorkin [19], Dvorkin et al. [20], Dvorkin and Derzhi [21], and Andra et al. [22, 23].
This chapter presents an overview of rock physics, starting with its history and ending with the most recent development, the digital rock physics. This chapter can be used as a basic reference pointing towards published sources where the topic is developed in-depth and detailed equations, tables, and experimental results are given. One of such comprehensive sources is the third edition of the
Rock physics remains a key component in interpreting seismic and other remote sensing data for the underlying properties and conditions of the subsurface. A plethora of such practical results has appeared and continues to appear in geophysical journals, such as
An important topic not addressed in this chapter is a simultaneous interpretation of different remote sensing sources, such as seismic prospecting, electric and electromagnetic sensing, and gravity methods. Once again, such materials can be found in the proceedings and books from the aforementioned professional societies.
We feel that the material presented can serve as a detailed introduction into the extensive field of physics of rocks and be of use to graduate students, as well as advanced professional in earth and environmental sciences.

It is also important to take a note of the constraints in the growth process that definitely influence the crystal structure and the structure related properties of the casting. The freezing pattern of the liquid melt decides the feeding of the mould which is instrumental in producing a complete and compact casting. For pure metals and even in case of alloys with a narrow freezing range a well defined solid–liquid macro-interface exists. Here feeding of the solidifying casting is the easiest, by the common lowering of the liquid metal surface in the mould. However, in many instances, a well defined interface is not witnessed. The solid–liquid interface could be discrete and not continuous. Here process of feeding the solidification sites that witness considerable shrinkages, may become complicated. It starts with an introduction into the wide bandgap (WBG) materials and the properties that make them potential candidates to enable the development of harsh environment microsystems. The future commercial success of WBG microsystems depends mainly on the availability of high-quality materials, well-established microfabrication processes, and economic viability. In such aspects SiC platform, in relation to other WBG materials, provides a clear and competitive advantage. The reasons for this will be detailed. Furthermore, the current status of the SiC thin film and bulk material technologies will also be discussed. Nitrogen-bearing stainless steel (HNSS) is a new corrosion-resistant alloy class exhibiting better tribological properties. High-pressure and powder metallurgy techniques were developed for the fabrication of HNSS. Solid-state routes allow nitrogen introduction through thermochemical, implantation, or plasma surface treatments. High-temperature gas nitriding (HTGN), carried out in an N2 atmosphere in the 1000°C range, allows N uptake, obtaining thick, ~0.5–1.0 wt.% N austenitic cases. HTGN is different from conventional nitriding, performed in the 500°C range, where intense CrxNy precipitation occurs, impairing the corrosion resistance. Low-temperature plasma nitriding (LTPN) introduces more N in solution, and colossal supersaturated expanded phases (~45 at.%N) are formed. N supersaturation and compressive stresses increase the hardness of the surface layer to 10–14 GPa. Ferritic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation-hardened stainless steels can be surface-treated by LTPN, obtaining expanded ferrite and martensite. However, single LTPN stainless steel may prematurely fail when submitted to high loading, as the thin and hard expanded layers collapse due to lack of load-bearing capacity. The processing parameters and nitrogen-hydrogen gas flow ratio were optimized to increase the yield of N2+ ion and NH-radical for efficient nitriding. The nitrided AISI316 specimens were prepared for multidimensional analysis to describe the fundamental features of low-temperature plasma nitriding. First, macroscopic evaluation revealed that nitrogen supersaturation induced the γ-lattice expansion and the higher nitrogen content than 4% of mass in depth. The mesoscopic analysis describes the holding temperature and initial grain-size effects on the microstructure changes. Plastic straining, grain-size refinement, and nitrogen zone-boundary diffusion processes advance with nitrogen supersaturation to drive the inner nitriding behavior. The microscopic analysis explains the microstructure refinement, the two-phase structuring, and the microstructure modification. Through this multi-dimensional analysis, the essential characteristics of the low-temperature plasma nitriding of 316 austenitic stainless steels were precisely understood to extend the engineering treatise on the bulk nitrogen stainless steels for surface modification and treatment of stainless steels by nitriding. Since 2014, he has been recognized as a Senior Researcher, at the Ministry of Science of Colombia. He is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Fundacion Universitaria Autonoma de las Americas, in Pereira, Risaralda, Colombia. He is an External Professor, Master in Research on Tropical Medicine and International Health, Universitat de Barcelona, Spain. He is also a professor at the Master in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Universidad Científica del Sur, Lima, Peru. In 2021 he has been awarded the “Raul Isturiz Award” Medal of the API. Also, in 2021, he was awarded with the “Jose Felix Patiño” Asclepius Staff Medal of the Colombian Medical College, due to his scientific contributions to COVID-19 during the pandemic. He is currently working as a Director for the Health Ministries Department of Malawi Union of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Dr. Kasenga has published over 5 articles on HIV/AIDS issues focusing on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT), including a book chapter on HIV testing counseling (currently in press).
