Centuries",subtitle:null,reviewType:"peer-reviewed",abstract:"\r\n\tIn March 2022, another book on human migration seems important when the events or tragedies unfolding in Eastern Europe are considered. People have always migrated and have moved, but, specifically looking at the last three hundred years, involuntary migration is on the rise. Involuntary migration does not only affect Europe; Asia, Africa, and North as well as South America, have had their fair share of natural catastrophes, invasions, and wars.
\r\n\tThis book will intend to look at different migrant patterns, voluntary and involuntary migration, over the last three centuries. What influenced people to leave their home countries, family, and friends and settle somewhere else? The book may include histories of the 19th century, consider tragedies and movements activated by political events in the 20th century, and/or look at recent events of the 21st century. Push and pull factors are important points. While most of us may be influenced in a negative way by the current happenings in Eastern Europe, the Russian invasion and resulting tragedies also demonstrate some very positive human traits – the preparedness of Ukraine’s surrounding countries to help those in need and to provide a safe place for the present.
\r\n\tWhether one looks at voluntary or involuntary migration into any country, after a period of adjustment, migrants do play a positive role. The research found that migrants contribute to the economy (food, shelter, employment, tax) and enrich a country’s cultural norms. Prerequisites for successful settlements are that the host society adopts a tolerant approach and that the migrants recognize the law and the language of the host country. Nothing is ever easy or without controversy, but I am a migrant (German Australian), and life in Australia has been relatively harmonious. Issues that could be considered in the book are multicultural societies (do monocultural societies still exist?) and theories of acculturation versus integration (settlement processes).
\r\n\tTwo further issues are very important in relation to human migration. There is climate change, global warming, and the environment, which clearly affect people’s movement. Small island populations are very concerned about rising sea levels. 2021 has also seen floods costing human lives: Turkey (August 2021), Brazil (December 2021), Chile (January 2021), and South India (November 2021), to name but a few. In Australia (March 2022), farms and whole townships in New South Wales and Queensland have been flooded for the second time in five years, and plans to resettle these towns are considered. Official and social media provide ample coverage of the events, which leads me to the next issue. There is today’s very important role of the media, of the official and social media. We are constantly bombarded with images of human war tragedies and flood victims. People in industrialized, western countries must be the best-informed populace. How far do the images and up-to-date TV news influence us, make us change our behavior, and perhaps even consider us more generous than we have been?
\r\n\tClimate change and the media are relatively new to the human migration debate, but both issues play important parts, and some interesting discussions are appreciated.
\r\n\t
Emerging contaminants (ECs) include a wide range of compounds and may be defined as naturally occurring, manufactured or man‐made chemicals or materials that have been found or are suspected to be present in various environmental compartments and whose toxicity or persistence are likely to significantly alter the metabolism of a living being [1]. Among them, pharmaceuticals have received considerable attention with respect to their environmental fate and toxicological properties over the last decade [2]. Pharmaceuticals represent an especially worrying class since they were designed to cause a physiological response and their presence in the environment may affect non‐target individuals and species [3]. This concern on pharmaceuticals presence in the aquatic environment has led to the recent consideration by European regulations within the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) (WFD). The Commission proposal of 31 January 2012 foresaw the inclusion of three pharmaceuticals, namely diclofenac, 17‐beta‐estradiol (E2) and 17‐alpha‐ethinylestradiol (EE2) in the list of priority substances. Instead, by the EU Decision 2015/495, these compounds together with another estrogen (E1) and three antibiotics (azithromycin, clarithromycin and erythromycin) were finally included in the first watch list of substances to be monitored in all member states to support future reviews of the priority substances list [4].
\nPharmaceuticals in domestic sewage or from hospital or industrial discharges end in municipal sewage treatment plants (STPs), but conventional wastewater treatments have been reported to be ineffective in the removal of such pollutants, with efficiency values of <5 to 40% [5]. In fact, STPs were not originally designed for the removal of pharmaceuticals due to the non‐existence of limiting regulations on their discharge [6, 7]. Consequently, STPs are important sources of such pollutants in the aquatic environment [8, 9]. In this regard, Verlicchi et al. [10], who reviewed the occurrence of 118 pharmaceuticals in the influent and effluent of 244 STPs, found that the occurrence of some of them in the effluent discharged into surface water bodies may pose a medium‐high (acute) risk to aquatic life. Among the studied pharmaceuticals, diclofenac was shown to have the highest average mass load (240 mg/1000 inhabitant) in the effluents of municipal STPs [10]. The removal efficiencies of diclofenac in conventional STPs have been reported to be about 17% [11], which translates into relative high concentrations in the corresponding effluents [12].
\nIn the recent years, phytoremediation of waters by using photoautotrophic aquatic organisms such as algae has gained attention for the removal of both organic and inorganic pollutants [13–15]. Microalgae are characterized by high photosynthetic efficiency, high growth rates, wide adaptability and high potential to remove inorganic nutrients from the wastewater. The principal mechanism of algal nutrient removal is their uptake into the cell biomass [16]. The main advantages of using microalgae for nutrients removal during the tertiary treatment of wastewaters are the possibility of recycling the assimilated nitrogen and phosphorus into algal biomass as a fertilizer, as a source of products (e.g. paraffin, olefin, glycerol, protein, anti‐oxidant, pigment, plastic, etc.), or as biofuel, and also the generation of an oxygenated high‐quality effluent [17]. However, although the capability of microalgae wastewater treatments systems to remove organic matter and nutrients has been deeply studied, little is known about the removal of ECs, such as pharmaceuticals, by algae. In fact, it has already been claimed the necessity of further studies on the removal of this sort of pollutants by algal systems [18].
\nIn this context, the aim of this study was to determine and compare the potential of green microalgae
The microalgae strains used in this study were
The inoculum of each strain was cultivated in 250‐ml Erlenmeyer flasks in the standard culture medium Mann and Myers [20], which is composed of (per litre of distilled water): 1.2 g MgSO4.7H2O, 1.0 g NaNO3, 0.3 CaCl2, 0.1 g K2HPO4, 3.0 x 10−2 g Na2EDTA, 6.0 x 10−3 g H3BO3, 2.0 x 10−3 g FeSO4.7H2O, 1.4 x 10−3 g MnCl2, 3.3 x 10−4 g ZnSO4.7H2O, 7.0 x 10−6 g Co(NO3)2.6H2O, 2.0 x 10−6 g CuSO4.5H2O. The inoculum was kept inside a vegetal culture chamber, where growth occurred under controlled temperature (25 ± 1°C), irradiance in the range of photosynthetically active radiation (175 µE m−2 s−1), photoperiod (12:12) and shaking (250 rpm).
\nBubbling column photobioreactors (PBRs) with spherical bases (40 mm diameter and 300 mm height with 300 ml capacity) were used for the experimental setup, keeping an operating volume of 250 ml. In each PBR, the Mann and Myers culture medium was inoculated with the required volume of the corresponding pre‐cultured microalgae in order to have an initial concentration of about 3 × 106 cells ml−1.
\nDuring the experimental phase, the culture was aerated with filtered air (0.22‐µm sterile air‐venting filter, MillexFG50‐Millipore), at a rate of 0.3 v/v/min, enriched with CO2 at 7% v/v, which was injected on demand to keep a constant pH (pH = 7.5 ± 0.5), as controlled by a pH sensor. The irradiance supplied during this phase was 370 µE m−2 s−1, which was provided by eight fluorescent lamps (58 W, 2150 lumen, Philips, France). The photoperiod was maintained in 12:12 h light/dark and the temperature in 25 ± 1°C.
PBRs were operated in batch mode until the end of the exponential growth phase and then under semicontinuous mode till the growth parameters remained constant at the steady state. During the batch culture, an aliquot of 5 ml was daily taken from each PBR for the analytical determinations, this volume being replaced with distilled water to keep the operation volume. During the semicontinuous culture, 30% of the culture volume was daily harvested and used for analysis, this volume being replaced with fresh medium.
\nFor each strain of microalgae used in this work (
Throughout the experiments, the growth of the culture was daily monitored by the determination of biomass concentration and cell density. The removal of pharmaceuticals was daily determined by the analysis of the remaining concentration of this drug in the culture medium. All analyses were conducted in triplicate.
Biomass concentration (Cb) was determined by optical density at 680 nm (OD680) by spectrophotometric (UV/visible spectrophotometer BECKMAN DU640) and verified by dry weight. Preliminary studies were conducted to determinate the relationship between dry weight and OD680 for each strain; as shown in Eq. (1) for
Dry weight measurements were performed by filtering 10 ml of culture through a 0.45 µm Whatman filter, which was then washed with 20 ml HCl (0.5 M) to dissolve precipitated salts. Then, the filtrate was dried in an oven at 80°C for 24 h. Additionally, the growth of the culture was measured as cell density (Nc) by cell counting with a Neubauer chamber.
\nThe initial and remaining pharmaceuticals concentration in the culture medium was quantified by a Waters HPLC 600 equipped with a 2487 Dual λ Absorbance Detector. A Phenomenex Gemini‐NX C18 column (5 µm, 250 mm × 4.6 mm) was used for the separation. The wavelengths of detection were 246 nm for paracetamol, 236 nm for salicylic acid and 276 nm for diclofenac. The mobile phase consisted of a mixture of acetonitrile to water (30:70, v/v) for the analysis of paracetamol and a mixture of acetonitrile to water to orthophosphoric acid (70:30:0.1, v/v/v) for salicylic acid and diclofenac. HPLC quality acetonitrile (CH3CN) and orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4) from Prolabo Chemicals and ultrapure water obtained by a Millipore System were used for the preparation of the mobile phase. Before use, each mixture was passed through a Millipore 0.45‐µm pore‐size filter and degasified in an ultrasound bath for 30 min. Before analysis, all the samples were centrifuged twice at 7500 rpm for 10 min (SIGMA 2‐16P centrifuge). For the chromatographic analysis, the mobile phase flow rate was 1 ml min‐1 and the injection volume was 100 μl.
\nGrowth kinetics were resolved in OriginPro 8 using the classic model originally described by Verhulst [21] called logistic model, which has been proved to fit the growth of microalgae [22]. The logistic model fits to a sigmoidal curve that describes the relationship between microorganisms’ growth and density in limited environmental conditions (Eq. (4)).
\nWhere
Furthermore, the kinetic curves for the removal of pharmaceuticals were fitted to the logistic model. In each case, the parameter
Finally, differences among the strains with respect to the kinetic parameters of growth and removal of pharmaceuticals were compared by a non‐parametric test using IBM SPPS Statistics 21. The comparison of means was performed by means of the U Mann‐Whitney test. Significance was defined at
For the removal of pharmaceuticals, the volumetric efficiency for each target compound was calculated as the difference between its average concentration in the influent (
The specific efficiency of the removed pharmaceuticals was calculated as the ratio between the volumetric efficiency and the biomass concentration (Cb) (Eq. (6)). Likewise, during the batch culture these efficiencies were cumulatively expressed as milligram per gram per biomass and as milligram per gram day during the steady state of the semicontinuous culture:

In view of the obtained results, it may be inferred that the presence of paracetamol, salicylic acid and diclofenac modified the growth parameters of the strains here studied. In most of the treatments, the addition of the pharmaceutical increased the biomass concentration, which may be explained by the fact that these pharmaceuticals were an additional source of organic carbon. It is well known that the genus
The fact that removal curves displayed a similar trend than growth curves points to the association between the microalgae growth and the removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals.

The Calderón and Hilbert operators are among the most relevant operators in harmonic analysis, arising from Hilbert’s double series theorem which is one of the simplest and most beautiful in the theory of double series of positive terms. It was proved by Hilbert, in the course of his investigations in the theory of integral equations, that the series
Other proofs of Hilbert’s double series theorem and generalizations in different directions were studied and published over time by influential mathematicians such as H. Weyl, F. Wiener, J. Schur, Fejér and F. Riesz, Pólya and Szegö, Francis and Littlewood, G.H. Hardy and M. Riesz, among others.
In [1, 2], G.H. Hardy observed that Hilbert’s theorem stated above is an immediate corollary of another theorem which has interest in itself. This theorem is as follows: If

The study of the weighted boundedness for integral operators on function spaces, like the one we develop in this chapter, is one of the main research fields in harmonic analysis. In particular, it has had a profound influence in partial differential equations, several complex variables, and number theory. Evidence of such success and importance is the pioneering work of leading mathematicians Bourgain, Zygmund, Calderón, Muckenhoupt, Wheeden, C. Fefferman, Stein, Ricci, Tao and so on.
I would like to deeply thank Dr. Hammad Khalil for considering me to write this chapter. Also, I would like to thank Professors E. Ferreyra and B. Viviani who published the article [7] and for many helpful discussions.

Today, the term “Systemic speech-and-language underdevelopment (SLU)” has firmly established in Russian science and practice, implying a complex developmental disorder of speech and language in children with a primary normal hearing and a conserved intellect, in which the main components of the language system are violated: vocabulary, grammar, phonetics, and, as a consequence, dialogic and monologic speech. Traditionally, a differentiated level-by-level analysis of the speech and language abilities of children is used. The variability of the manifestations and severity of speech-and-language disorders were initially systematized and characterized in four levels of underdevelopment: from the complete absence of phrase speech to the availability of simple and complex sentences with lexico-grammatical errors. Effective algorithms of speech therapist work with SLU are introduced. These difficulties lead to a disruption of social interaction, which might be one of the obstacles to speech-language intervention in these children. The text is based on an originally developed testing material aimed at selected pragmatic-oriented communication situations relating to everyday activities and real life. Based on a comparison of domestic and international resources in this area, as well as mediated and own empirical experience, our assessment approach is based on the conclusion that pragmatics can be understood in different contexts and perspectives. The text presents the results of a partial survey comparing the performance of children with ASD and children with typical development. The assessment focused on the children’s election of the correct picture of a pair of pictures that represent usual communication and social situations. The results of the research suggest fewer incorrect responses in children with ASD and in different areas compared with children with typical development. Traditional counseling involves a broad perspective that enhances learning for transformation and integration of sociocultural values that are peculiar to each human society. A cursory review of the literature suggests that the concept of traditional counseling is rooted in traditional systems of knowledge and sociocultural customs and practices, and it promotes a collective approach to problem identification, resolution, and management. The traditional counseling process centers on four aspects: traditional counselor, client, family, and community. The key elements that inform the theoretical framework of traditional counseling from an African perspective are: cultural context, collective belief system, and initiation rituals Traditional systems of knowledge deemed essential for each generation are passed on successively to the next generation by elderly people who do not only have the necessary wisdom and experience, but are also adorned with social competences and skills.",book:{id:"9136",slug:"counseling-and-therapy",title:"Counseling and Therapy",fullTitle:"Counseling and Therapy"},signatures:"Hector Chiboola",authors:[{id:"314172",title:"Prof.",name:"Hector",middleName:null,surname:"Chiboola",slug:"hector-chiboola",fullName:"Hector Chiboola"}]},{id:"55388",title:"Beauty, Body Image, and the Media",slug:"beauty-body-image-and-the-media",totalDownloads:7764,totalCrossrefCites:5,totalDimensionsCites:12,abstract:"This chapter analyses the role of the mass media in people’s perceptions of beauty. We summarize the research literature on the mass media, both traditional media and online social media, and how they appear to interact with psychological factors to impact appearance concerns and body image disturbances. There is a strong support for the idea that traditional forms of media (e.g. magazines and music videos) affect perceptions of beauty and appearance concerns by leading women to internalize a very slender body type as ideal or beautiful. Rather than simply being passive recipients of unrealistic beauty ideals communicated to them via the media, a great number of individuals actually seek out idealized images in the media. Finally, we review what is known about the role of social media in impacting society’s perception of beauty and notions of idealized physical forms. Particularly, Italian teenagers were the first among western populations to experience fears of infection, home confinement, and social restrictions due to a long lockdown period (10 weeks). This study explores the role of coping strategies (task-oriented, emotion-oriented, and avoidance coping) and meta-beliefs about worry as vulnerability factors associated with adolescents’ anxiety. A community sample of adolescents (N = 284, aged 16–18 y.o.) answered questionnaires assessing anxiety symptoms (RCMAS-2), meta-cognitive beliefs and processes about worry (MCQ-C), and coping strategies (CISS). Results show that 37% of participants report clinically elevated anxiety. Emotion-centered coping predicted higher anxiety, whereas task-centered coping resulted associated with decreased anxiety. Cognitive monitoring about their own worry contributes, but to a lesser extent, to higher levels of anxiety. The implications for the intervention are discussed, especially the need to enhance the coping skills of adolescents and mitigate the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic, which could last for a long time.",book:{id:"10671",title:"Adolescences",coverURL:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/books/images_new/10671.jpg"},signatures:"Loredana Benedetto, Ilenia Schipilliti and Massimo Ingrassia"},{id:"83023",title:"Gestational Tryptophan Fluctuation Underlying Ontogenetic Origin of Neuropsychiatric Disorders",slug:"gestational-tryptophan-fluctuation-underlying-ontogenetic-origin-of-neuropsychiatric-disorders",totalDownloads:5,totalDimensionsCites:0,doi:"10.5772/intechopen.106421",abstract:"Neuropsychiatry underlies personality development and social functioning. Borderline personality disorder exhibits high trait aggression and is associated with tryptophan hydroxylase polymorphisms. The acute tryptophan depletion reduces plasma and cerebrospinal fluid tryptophan availability and brain serotonin concentrations, leading to alterations in personality and trait-related behaviors. Tryptophan is essential for fatal neurodevelopment and immunomodulation in pregnancy. Gestational tryptophan fluctuation induced by maternal metabolic disorders or drug administrations may account for the maternal-fetal transmission determining neurogenesis and microbial development, consequentially shaping the long-standing patterns of thinking and behavior. However, it is not possible to assess the gestational tryptophan exposure effects on fetal brain and gastrointestinal system in humans for ethical reasons. The maternal–fetal microbe transmission in rodents during gestation, vaginal delivery, and breastfeeding is inevitable. Chicken embryo may be an alternative and evidence from the chicken embryo model reveals that gestational tryptophan fluctuation, i.e., exposed to excessive tryptophan or its metabolite, serotonin, attenuates aggressiveness and affects peer sociometric status. We have analyzed the evolution of the student throughout their academic history until the moment in which they are hospitalized in serious condition by means of an exploratory factor analysis, with the application of the KMO sample adequacy of 0.776 and the significance of Bartlett’s test of sphericity p < .001, we have obtained a high correlation between the variables. The factors obtained are study limitations, symptomatology representation, study facilitators, other limitations. The results show that it is necessary to take into account the conditions that prevent them from permanence, inclusion, coexistence, and educational achievement. Likewise, symptomatic expression and family support are key elements in improving the educational process of pupils with SMD. These factors allow us to infer pedagogical practices that are more appropriate to their needs.",book:{id:"10671",title:"Adolescences",coverURL:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/books/images_new/10671.jpg"},signatures:"Cristina Sánchez Romero and Francisco Crespo Molero"},{id:"82928",title:"Utilizing Environmental Analytical Chemistry to Establish Culturally Appropriate Community Partnerships",slug:"utilizing-environmental-analytical-chemistry-to-establish-culturally-appropriate-community-partnersh",totalDownloads:2,totalDimensionsCites:0,doi:"10.5772/intechopen.106237",abstract:"In the United States, minority communities are disproportionately exposed to environmental contaminants due to a combination of historically discriminatory based racial policies and a lack of social political capital. American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities have additional factors that increase the likelihood of contaminant exposure. Some of these factors include the disparity of social, cultural, and political representation, differences in cultural understandings between AI/AN communities and western populations, and the unique history of tribal sovereignty in the US. Since the 1990s, research from both private and federal organizations have sought to increase research with AI/AN communities. However, although rooted in beneficence, the rift in cultural upbringing can lead to negative outcomes as well as further isolation and misrepresentation of AI/AN communities. Environmental analytical chemistry (EAC) is one approach that provides a means to establish productive and culturally appropriate collaborations with AI/AN populations. EAC is a more holistic approach that incorporates numerous elements and disciplines to understand underlying environmental questions, while allowing direct input from AI/AN communities. Additionally, EAC allows for a myriad of experimental approaches that can be designed for each unique tribal community, to maintain cultural respect and probe individual nuanced questions.",book:{id:"11434",title:"Indigenous Populations - Perspectives From Scholars and Practitioners in Contemporary Times",coverURL:"https://cdn.intechopen.com/books/images_new/11434.jpg"},signatures:"Jonathan Credo, Jani C.
