Barbara Sladonja graduated in biology – ecology at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, Croatia, and obtained a Doctoral degree (PhD) in Natural Sciences at the University of Udine and University of Florence, Italy. She organised the international scientific conference “Mediterranean Malvasias” in Poreč, Croatia, in 2005, and the International Scientific Congress GESCO (Groupe d’Etude des Systemes de Conduite de la Vigne) in Poreč (Croatia) in 2007. She acted as a collaborator or leader on many national and international scientific projects covering the grape and olive field. She works at the Institute of Agriculture and Tourism Poreč.

The book "The Mediterranean Genetic Code - Grapevine and Olive" collects relevant papers documenting the results of research in grapevine and olive genetics, as a contribution to overall compendium of the existing biodiversity for both species with insight into molecular mechanisms responsible for their desirable and important traits. Book encompasses a broad and diverse palette of different topics related to grapevine and olive genetics, with no areal or any other strict limitation, keeping the title as a loose frame for borderless science. Divided in four sections it takes us for a "molecular walk" through different levels of genetic variability, uncovering the remains of still existing wild populations and treasures of neglected local peculiarities, weaving the network from plant to product and back to the beginning, to the hearth of all questions asked and answers hidden in genetics.

Non-Native Invasive Species as Ecosystem Service Providers

Non-native or alien species present a range of threats to native ecosystems and human well-being. Many such species have selective advantages over native species, such as faster growth and reproduction rates, higher ecological tolerance, or more effective dispersal mechanisms. However, these species are often inadvertently demonised without sufficient awareness of the ecological principles—disturbance, niche and competition—that contribute to species dominance in an ecosystem. Non-native species can provide services useful to humans, particularly in facilitating many contemporary needs of modern civilisation. In the present paper, the available records on the influence of non-native invasive species and the relationship between services lost and new services acquired due to their presence will be discussed.
